Chapter 2: The Moonblood
The howl was not a sound that entered through my ears. It was a vibration that resonated deep within my bones, a primal frequency that made the silver light of the moon feel like a physical weight pressing down on my skin. My wolf, the part of me that had been shattered by Damien’s rejection, whimpered and curled tighter into a ball of agony in my chest.
I was dying. I could feel it. The bond that had tethered me to life, to the pack, to the very essence of my wolf, had been severed with a single, cruel sentence. *“I, Damien Blackwood, Alpha Prince of the Silvercrest Pack, reject you, Lyra, as my mate and Luna.”* The words still echoed in my skull, each repetition a fresh stab of pain.
I had run. I hadn't even looked back at the gathered crowd, their faces a blur of pity, disdain, and cold amusement. I had fled the gilded cage of the pack house, past the borders, and into the ancient, whispering forest that bordered our territory. The trees here were old, their trunks thick as houses, their branches weaving a canopy so dense that the moonlight came through in fragmented, dancing shards.
I stumbled, my knees giving out. My hands sank into the damp, mossy earth as a wave of nausea, cold and violent, crashed over me. The rejection sickness. It was a poison, an emotional and spiritual hemorrhage that would slowly, painfully, drain the life from me. My wolf was dying, and without her, I was nothing. I was an Omega, worthless and unmated. I was meant to be a footnote in the Alpha Prince's story, a temporary inconvenience he had discarded like a broken toy.
I lay there, my cheek pressed against the cool soil, breathing in the scent of decay and wet earth. It smelled like death. It smelled like my future. I waited for the darkness to take me, to pull me into a peaceful oblivion where Damien’s sneer and the pack's laughter couldn't reach me.
But the darkness didn't come.
Instead, the moonlight around me began to intensify. It wasn't the normal silver of the night; it was a brilliant, white-gold luminescence that pulsed with a gentle, rhythmic beat, like a heartbeat. The air grew thick and heavy, humming with an energy so potent it made my hair stand on end.
The howl came again, but this time it was right beside me, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated through the ground and into my very core. I forced my eyes open, my vision blurry with unshed tears.
A wolf stood before me.
It wasn't a wolf like any I had ever seen. It was massive, taller than a horse, its coat a shimmering, ethereal white that seemed to be made of solidified moonlight. Its eyes were not amber or gold, but a deep, swirling violet, ancient and unfathomable. It wasn't a physical creature of flesh and blood; it was a spirit, a ghost of a wolf, and yet its presence was more real, more tangible than anything I had ever felt.
It stared at me, its gaze piercing through my misery, and I felt a strange sense of recognition. It was as if I had known this creature all my life, as if its soul was a part of my own.
*Rise, child of the Moon.*
The voice echoed in my mind, not in words, but in pure feeling and intent. It was impossible to disobey. I pushed myself up onto my knees, my body trembling with the effort.
*You are not dying. You are being reborn.*
I shook my head, a sob escaping my lips. "You're wrong. He rejected me. I have no wolf, no bond. I'm an Omega. I'm nothing."
The spirit wolf lowered its massive head, and a wave of warmth, soothing and gentle, washed over me, easing the sharpest edges of my pain. *You are mistaken. The bond you lost was a shadow, a false echo. The true bond, the one that flows through your blood, is far older and more powerful than the Alpha Prince could ever comprehend.*
It took a step closer, its luminous form engulfing me.
*I am the Guardian of the Moonblood. For centuries, I have waited for the last of your line to awaken. You are not an Omega, Lyra. You are the last descendant of the Moonblood, the first wolves, the ones who were born from the tears of the Moon Goddess herself. Your blood is the source of all our power. Your blood is the true Alpha's blood.*
My mind reeled. It was impossible. The Moonblood line was a myth, a story told to pups to make them dream of a glorious past. They were supposed to have been wiped out millennia ago, their power lost to time.
"I don't understand," I whispered, my voice raw. "I have no power. I have nothing."
*You have everything. You simply forgot how to look,* the spirit said, its violet eyes burning into mine. *Damien rejected a prize he was never worthy of. He thought he was casting out an Omega, but he has unleashed a force that will shake the very foundations of the werewolf world. Your wolf is not dead. She is dormant, waiting for you to claim your birthright.*
A jolt, sharp and electric, shot through my spine. It was a spark of life, of defiance, cutting through the fog of my despair.
*The Moon Goddess has a plan for you, Lyra. Your pain is the forge that will temper you. Your rejection is the catalyst that will ignite your power. But first, you must accept who you are. You must embrace the blood of the Moon.*
The spirit wolf began to fade, its light dissolving into the air around me. But before it vanished completely, it left one final, resonating thought in my mind.
*Seek the Crescent Moon Shrine. There, you will find your truth. And when you are ready, you will return to Silvercrest. And you will make the Alpha Prince regret the day he dared to reject the last Moonblood.*
The light vanished, plunging me back into the darkness of the forest. But I was no longer the same broken girl who had collapsed in the dirt. The rejection sickness was still there, a dull ache in my chest, but it was now overshadowed by a new, fierce determination. I was battered, bruised, and betrayed.
But I was not broken. I was the last descendant of the Moonblood. And I was just getting started.
I pushed myself to my feet, my legs shaky but steady. I looked up at the moon, and this time, I didn't see a symbol of my sorrow. I saw a promise. A promise of power, of revenge, and of a destiny far greater than being the Alpha Prince's Luna.
I took a deep breath, the scent of the forest filling my lungs, and I began to walk. The Crescent Moon Shrine was calling me. And I was ready to answer.
