Chapter 10: The Inferno's Embrace
Darkness swallowed the grand hall whole. I didn't need to see—I had lived this moment a hundred times in my previous life, though never like this. Never with this much fire in my veins.
"Now!" Cassandra's voice cut through the black.
Steel sang from a dozen sheaths. The Society's assassins had been waiting, hidden in the shadows that now served them. But I had been waiting longer.
My hand found the Duke's arm in the dark. "Trust me."
"Always," he whispered, and I felt the heat of his breath against my ear. Even now, even in the face of death, that single word made my heart stutter.
I threw the knife—not at Cassandra, but at the chandelier above her. The oil I'd paid a servant to douse it with caught fire, and golden light flooded the room once more. The Society members froze, blinking in the sudden brightness.
They were exposed. Caught in their own trap.
"You think this changes anything?" Julian stepped forward, his face twisted with rage. My former lover, now a stranger wearing a handsome mask over a rotting soul. "You're still just a woman playing at power."
The Duke laughed—a cold, sharp sound that silenced the room. "She's not playing, Julian. She's winning."
I spread my arms, letting the firelight catch the silver embroidery of my gown. "You're right about one thing, Julian. I'm not playing. I'm ending this."
The doors burst open behind them, and Cassandra's guards flooded in—except they weren't hers anymore. They wore the Duke's colors now. My colors.
"Your gold was counterfeit," I said to Cassandra, watching her face pale. "The Duke's is real. And it buys loyalty better than fear ever will."
"Bitch," she hissed, pulling a dagger from her bodice. "I'll gut you myself."
But Julian was faster. He lunged at me with a blade I didn't see him draw—I hadn't accounted for this. In my previous life, he'd died years from now, not tonight. The future was changing, twisting like smoke in a storm.
"Seraphina!" The Duke's voice was a roar of pure terror.
Time slowed. I saw the blade arcing toward my heart. I saw the Duke moving, impossibly fast, his body interposing itself between me and death. I saw the moment the steel found his flesh—the way his eyes widened, the blood blooming like a dark flower across his white shirt.
"No!" My scream tore through the hall as Julian's blade withdrew, slick with crimson.
The Duke crumpled, and I caught him, falling to my knees in a pool of his blood. His blood. The man who had no reason to love someone as broken as me—who had every reason to hate me—had taken a knife meant for my heart.
"Fool," I wept, pressing my hands to the wound. "You stupid, beautiful fool."
Julian stood over us, triumphant. "How poetic. The Ice Queen weeps for her duke." He raised the blade again. "Now you'll watch him die, and then I'll—"
He never finished.
Fire exploded from my hands—not literal flame, but something far worse. Every secret I'd gathered, every piece of incriminating evidence, every ledger and letter and whisper I'd collected over months of patient vengeance—I unleashed it all. Papers flew through the air like burning leaves, landing on Society members who snatched them up in horror.
"Your crimes," I said, my voice steady despite the blood on my hands. "Your debts. Your murders. Your treason." I watched them read their own death warrants. "The Empress will see every word."
Cassandra screamed in fury. Julian lunged again.
I was ready this time.
I caught his wrist, twisting with a force I'd learned in this very lifetime—skills I'd gained from the Duke's trainers, honed for this exact moment. The blade clattered to the floor. Julian's eyes went wide as I drove my knee into his stomach, then slammed his head against the marble.
He crumpled, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop.
"Seraphina!" The Duke's voice was weak, but it pulled me back from the edge. "Please... don't become them."
I looked down at Julian—broken, bleeding, defeated. Then at the Duke, pale and dying beneath me. My hands shook.
"Your life," I said, turning back to Julian, "is no longer mine to take. The Empress will have that pleasure."
I left him there, and crawled back to the Duke, pressing my forehead to his. "Don't you dare leave me. Not now. Not when I've finally found something worth living for."
His lips curved in a bloody smile. "Didn't know... you cared."
"Shut up and fight," I commanded, but my voice cracked. "I'm not done with you yet."
And then I remembered. In my previous life, I'd overheard a conversation—a healer's secret, a rare herb that grew only in the mountains of the north. It could save him. It would save him.
"Stay with me," I whispered, cradling his face. "I know how to fix this. I know everything, remember?"
The Duke's eyes fluttered closed, but his hand gripped mine with surprising strength. "I trust you."
I raised my head, looking at the chaos around us—the Society in ruins, Cassandra weeping over her destroyed legacy, Julian being dragged away by guards. The old world was burning.
But I would build something new from these ashes.
And at my side, if fate was kind, would be a man who loved me enough to die for me.
"Your Majesty," I said to a trembling noblewoman who'd been hiding behind a pillar. "Send word to the palace. Tell the Empress the Society's reign is over."
Then I turned to my guards, my voice ringing with iron authority. "Bring me the finest healers in the capital. And send riders north—I need a herb called sunfire's kiss."
As they scrambled to obey, I looked down at the Duke's pale face and made a vow.
I would save him. I would rule beside him. And I would spend the rest of my life proving that this time, I had chosen something worth living for.
The crown of ashes would become a crown of fire.
And my heart of ice had finally learned to burn.

*In the shadows of the ruined hall, a figure stepped forward—one I hadn't noticed before. A woman in a traveling cloak, her face hidden.*
*"Well played, Your Highness," she said, and her voice was smooth as silk and sharp as razors. "But the Society was merely the first of your enemies." She let the cloak fall, revealing steel gauntlets and a crown of black iron. "I am the Night Empress. And I've come to collect what is rightfully mine."*
*The Duke's blood was still warm on my hands.*
*I rose to my feet.*
*"Then you've come to die," I said.*
*Her smile was cruel and knowing.*
*"We'll see."*
