Chapter 4: The Gilded Cage
The gown was a masterpiece of icy blue silk, a river of fabric that clung to my curves before pooling at my feet like liquid starlight. It was a cage of beauty, gilded and exquisite, and I was the canary meant to sing prettily within it. Alessandro had chosen it himself, along with the diamond choker that felt less like jewelry and more like a collar. A brand. *His* brand.
He stood beside me in the grand foyer of the estate, a vision in a tailored black tuxedo. He was devastatingly handsome, a dark god carved from marble and sin. His thumb traced the line of my jaw, a gesture that could have been tender if not for the possessive glint in his eyes.
"You are the most beautiful thing I own," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down my spine. The words were a compliment, but they were also a declaration of ownership. I was a possession. A prized artifact to be displayed.
"Thank you," I managed, my voice steady despite the tremor in my heart. I had learned to play the part. The docile wife. The silent ornament. It was a performance, and tonight, the stage was Enzo Falcone's grand ballroom.
The gala was a spectacle of wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers cast a thousand dancing lights over a sea of silk and diamonds. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the murmur of calculated conversations. Alessandro was in his element, a predator moving through his territory. He kept a firm hand on the small of my back, guiding me through the crowd, introducing me with a smile that never quite reached his eyes.
"Don Falcone," Alessandro's voice was smooth as poisoned honey as we approached a man with silver-streaked hair and eyes the color of a stormy sea. Enzo Falcone. He was older than Alessandro, his power a more weathered, ancient force. His gaze swept over me, a slow, assessing appraisal that made my skin crawl.
"Alessandro," Enzo replied, his voice a gravelly drawl. "And this must be the new Contessa. Enchanting." He took my gloved hand, his lips brushing the fabric in a gesture that was more mockery than respect. "You have exquisite taste, my boy."
Alessandro's smile tightened almost imperceptibly. "I do."
Enzo's eyes lingered on me, a unsettling spark of interest flickering within them. "I do hope you will allow me a dance with your lovely bride later, Alessandro. A man should share his treasures, don't you think?"
The air around us grew cold. "Isabella doesn't dance," Alessandro said, the finality in his tone absolute.
The moment was broken by a whisper in Alessandro's ear from one of his men. A flicker of displeasure crossed his face. "Forgive me, Enzo. Business calls. Isabella, stay with the Don's wife. I'll return shortly." It wasn't a request.
No sooner had Alessandro disappeared into the crowd than Enzo was at my side, his hand on my elbow, steering me away from the safety of the other women. His grip was firm, unyielding.
"You look like a startled doe, Contessa," he murmured, his breath warm against my ear. "A beautiful creature caught in a hunter's snare. But I wonder if you know the nature of the beast who holds your leash."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "I don't know what you mean."
Enzo chuckled, a low, unpleasant sound. "Alessandro. He's a man of many faces. The charming businessman. The devoted husband. But there's a reason his enemies don't just die, Isabella. They vanish. There's a room in your grand estate, I believe. A special room, where he keeps his little… souvenirs."
The blood drained from my face. The door. The keypad. The look in his eyes. Enzo saw my reaction, and his smile widened, a cruel, knowing thing.
"Ah, I see you've found it. But have you seen what's inside? Have you seen the monster he keeps chained in the dark?" He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "He's not just a Don, Isabella. He's a butcher. And you, my dear, are married to him."
The world tilted. I felt sick. A vision of the cold metal door flashed in my mind, and I was overcome with an urge to run.
"I think you're mistaken," I said, my voice shaking.
"Am I?" Enzo's eyes glinted. "Ask him about the Marchetti family. The whole family. Ask him about the night he made a widow of their daughter and an orphan of their son. Ask him what he did with the boy."
A wave of nausea washed over me. I stumbled back, but his hand tightened on my arm.
"He'll tell you it was business. A necessary evil. But that's a lie. It was revenge. A blood debt that wasn't his to collect. And he enjoyed it, Isabella. I saw his face when he did it. He smiled."
A shadow fell over us, and the temperature dropped by ten degrees.
"Enzo." Alessandro's voice was a razor's edge, slicing through the noise of the party. His eyes, when they met mine, were black with fury. They weren't looking at me with concern or worry. They were looking at me like I was a disobedient dog caught sniffing at the wrong tree.
Enzo released my arm, a mocking smile on his lips. "Alessandro. Just having a lovely chat with your wife. She's quite… inquisitive."
Alessandro stepped between us, his body a wall of seething tension. "The conversation is over." He didn't shout. He didn't need to. The menace in his quiet words was more terrifying than any scream. He took my arm, his grip bruising, and pulled me away from Enzo and the crowd.
He didn't say a word as he marched me through the ballroom and out into a deserted hallway. He pushed me against the cold marble wall, his body caging me in. The fury in his eyes was a living thing, crackling with dark energy.
"What did he say to you?" The question was a demand, a threat.
"Nothing," I whispered, my lips trembling. "Just… pleasantries."
"Don't lie to me." He slammed his fist against the wall beside my head, the sound echoing in the empty corridor. "What did Enzo Falcone say?"
My mind was reeling. The door. The Marchetti family. The boy. I couldn't look at him. "He said… he said you're a butcher."
A cold, humorless smile touched Alessandro's lips. He leaned in, his voice a venomous whisper against my ear. "Then you would be wise to listen to him."
The admission sent a jolt of pure terror through me. It wasn't a denial. It was a confirmation.
"Listen to me very carefully, Isabella," he said, his thumb tracing the delicate line of my collarbone. "Enzo Falcone is a liar. A snake who will say anything to get what he wants. And what he wants is to get to me. Through you. You are my wife. My weakness. He will try to poison your mind against me."
"Your weakness?" I choked out. "Is that all I am to you?"
His eyes softened a fraction, but the steel beneath remained. "You are my wife. My property. And no one touches what is mine. Not Enzo. Not anyone." He cupped my face, his touch jarringly gentle against the violence of his gaze. "Stay away from him, Isabella. His words are poison. And if you keep drinking them, I won't be able to protect you from the consequences."
He released me, stepping back. The air rushed back into my lungs, but the cold dread remained. He had confirmed it. He was a monster. And I was trapped in his gilded cage. I was his to protect, his to possess, and his to destroy. The door to his secrets was open, and I was terrified of what I would find if I dared to walk through it. I had to find a way out. But in a world ruled by men like Alessandro Vitale, the only way out was death.
