Chapter 1: The Devil’s Proposal

The scent of expensive leather and cold coffee hung in the air, a stark contrast to the stale, recycled atmosphere of the accounting bullpen where Chloe Mitchell had spent the last three years of her life. Her desk, a fortress of spreadsheets and highlighters, was her kingdom. A tiny, insignificant kingdom, but it paid the rent on her shoebox apartment and kept her younger brother, Leo, in his ridiculously expensive art supplies.

"Mitchell. Mr. Blackwood's office. Now."

The words, delivered by his ice-queen assistant, Vivian, sliced through the low hum of the office. Chloe’s heart did a nosedive into her stomach. Adrian Blackwood. The CEO. The man who could freeze a person with a single, glacial stare. The man whose signature was worth more than her entire life’s earnings.

Everyone in the office had a theory about why you got called to the top floor. It was never good. It was either a demotion, a termination, or a public flaying for a decimal point out of place.

Chloe smoothed down her sensible, bargain-bin cardigan and grabbed a notepad, a pathetic shield against the oncoming storm. Her mind raced through the last quarter's reports. Everything had balanced. She’d double-checked the numbers on the Meridian acquisition until her eyes crossed.

Vivian led her down a hallway of glass and polished steel, her heels clicking a death knell on the marble floor. The door to the inner sanctum opened, and Chloe stepped inside.

The office was a monument to power. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a dizzying view of the city, but the man behind the massive ebony desk was the true focal point. Adrian Blackwood didn’t look up immediately, his attention fixed on a tablet in his hand. The sharp lines of his bespoke suit did little to soften the ruthless angles of his face. He was younger than most CEOs, early thirties, but there was a cold, predatory intelligence in his eyes that made him seem ancient.

"Sit," he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that sent an unwanted shiver down her spine.

Chloe perched on the edge of a chair, her notepad clutched in her lap like a life raft. He finally looked up, pinning her with those gray, unreadable eyes. No greeting. No pleasantries. Just a direct hit.

"Your work is meticulous, Mitchell. Boring, but meticulous. That's why I'm giving you this opportunity instead of firing you on the spot."

Her breath hitched. "Firing me? Mr. Blackwood, I don't understand. The Meridian report was—"

"It wasn't about the report." He leaned forward, steepling his fingers. "It's about a merger. A very personal one. The board is pressuring me to solidify a partnership with the Tanaka Corporation. Their chairman, Hiroshi Tanaka, is old-fashioned. He wants a family man at the helm."

Chloe blinked, utterly lost. "I... I'm not sure what that has to do with me."

"Everything," he said, his voice dropping to a silken, dangerous whisper. "Tanaka will only sign the deal if he believes I am a stable, committed individual. My reputation as a ruthless bachelor is a liability. I need a fiancée."

The word hung in the air between them, absurd and terrifying.

"You need a what?" she choked out.

"A fiancée. For six months. You will attend events with me, play the part of the doting, soon-to-be wife. You will look at me with adoration, and I will look at you like you're the most fascinating woman in the world. In exchange, you keep your job, and I'll add a generous bonus to your salary. Enough to cover your brother's tuition for the next two years."

The mention of Leo made her stomach clench. He knew. Of course, he knew. He had a file on her, probably with her entire pathetic life story detailed in it.

"This is insane," she whispered, her mind reeling. "This is... blackmail."

"It's a business proposition," Adrian corrected, his expression unchanging. "A mutually beneficial arrangement. You get financial security. I get a multi-billion-dollar merger. The alternative..." He paused, letting the threat hang in the air. "The alternative is that I find a reason to make your position redundant. The company is restructuring, after all. It would be a shame to lose such a 'boring, but meticulous' accountant."

Chloe felt the blood drain from her face. He wasn't giving her a choice. He was handing her a loaded gun and telling her to either shoot herself or play his twisted game. Six months of pretending to be in love with this… this ice sculpture. Six months of smiling and clinging to the arm of a man who saw people as assets or liabilities.

Her pride screamed at her to tell him to go to hell. To march out of this glass tower and take her chances. But then she saw Leo's face, the way his eyes lit up when he showed her his latest painting, and the crushing weight of their debts. She was all he had.

"Six months," she said, her voice barely a whisper, hating the tremor in it. "And this stays between us. It's just an act."

Adrian’s lips curved into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. It was the smile of a man who had just won a game she didn't even know she was playing.

"An act, Miss Mitchell," he agreed, rising from his chair and walking around the desk. He stopped in front of her, so close she could smell the crisp, expensive scent of his cologne. He reached out and, with a surprising gentleness, tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was electric, sending a jolt of heat through her that was entirely unwanted.

"The most convincing act of your life."

He was so close, his gaze so intense, that she felt like a mouse caught in the gaze of a hawk. She had agreed to a contract, a fake engagement with the most dangerous man she'd ever met. She had just sold six months of her life to the devil.

But as she looked into his cold, gray eyes, she saw a flicker of something else. Something calculating, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit hungry. And she had the chilling realization that she had just made a deal with a man who never, ever lost.

And this fake engagement wasn't going to be a simple act at all. It was going to be a war.
