Chapter 6: The Weight of Secrets
The silence in the penthouse was deafening, a stark contrast to the chaos that had just erupted. Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his silhouette sharp against the glittering cityscape. His shoulders were tense, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The champagne from the party had long since lost its fizz, but the air between us was electric.
"I didn't ask you to follow me," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to steady it. I was perched on the edge of the marble counter in the kitchen, my fingers gripping the cold stone as if it were the only thing keeping me upright.
"No, but you needed me to." He turned, and for the first time, I saw something other than the polished billionaire. There was a rawness in his eyes, a crack in the armor he wore so effortlessly.
I laughed, but it was hollow. "Needed you? You've made it perfectly clear what this arrangement is, Alexander. A transaction. A contract. I'm just a placeholder until you can get the real thing back."
His jaw tightened. "Is that what you think? That you're just a placeholder?"
"What else am I supposed to think?" I slid off the counter, my heels clicking against the marble as I stepped closer. "You married me to save your company, to save face after Victoria walked out. And now she's back, and you're… what? Going to toss me aside like a used receipt?"
"Victoria isn't back," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "She showed up at the party uninvited. That was her way of testing the waters, seeing if she could still get a reaction from me."
"And did she?"
His eyes locked onto mine, and the intensity there made my breath catch. "She got a reaction from you. That's what mattered."
I shook my head, my chest tightening. "I don't understand you. You push me away, you keep me at arm's length, and then you say things like that. What do you want from me, Alexander?"
He closed the distance between us, his hand reaching out to cup my face. The touch was gentle, so different from the sharp edges of his words. "I want you to stop pretending you don't feel this. This thing between us—it's not just a contract, Lily. It hasn't been for a while."
I pulled back, my heart racing. "You don't get to say that. Not after everything. Not when I found out about you and Victoria—"
"Victoria and I are over," he interrupted, his voice cracking. "She broke me, Lily. She made me believe I wasn't capable of love, that I didn't deserve it. And then I met you, and you made me feel like I could be more than the man she left behind."
I stared at him, the confession hanging in the air like a fragile thread. "So why didn't you tell me? Why did I have to find out from the gossip blogs?"
He ran a hand through his hair, his composure finally crumbling. "Because I was ashamed. I didn't want you to see me as the man who got played, who fell for a woman who only wanted my money and my name. I spent years building this empire, and she made me feel like it meant nothing."
"Alexander…" My voice softened, the anger I'd been clinging to starting to slip.
"She showed up at the party to gloat," he continued, his eyes glistening. "She told me she was engaged to someone else, someone richer. She wanted to see me crumble. But all I could think about was you. The way you looked at me when you saw her. The way you walked away."
I felt the tears prick at my eyes. "I walked away because I thought you still loved her."
"I loved the idea of her," he admitted. "But I love the reality of you. And I know I've been a coward, hiding behind contracts and boundaries because I was terrified of getting hurt again. But I can't keep pretending, Lily. Not when it comes to you."
The words hung between us, heavy and raw. I wanted to believe him, to let myself fall into the warmth of his confession. But my own demons clawed at the edges of my mind, demanding to be heard.
"You think you're the only one with secrets?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "You think you're the only one who's been hurt?"
His brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
I took a shaky breath, the walls I'd built around my own past beginning to crack. "I wasn't always this strong, Alexander. Before I became a wedding planner, before I built my business, I was engaged to someone else. He was charming, successful, everything I thought I wanted. And then I found out he'd been cheating on me for months—with my best friend."
His expression shifted, the hardness in his eyes replaced by something softer. "Lily…"
"They made me feel like I was the problem," I continued, my voice breaking. "Like I wasn't enough. And I believed them. For years, I believed I didn't deserve real love. That's why I agreed to this arrangement. Because it was safer. Because I could control the outcome."
"God, Lily." He stepped closer, his hands finding mine. "You've been carrying this alone?"
"I've been carrying it my whole life," I admitted. "Telling myself I wasn't worth more. That this—" I gestured between us, "—was all I could hope for."
He pulled me into his arms, and I let myself collapse against him. The strength of his embrace was both grounding and terrifying. For the first time in years, I didn't feel alone.
"I'm sorry," he murmured against my hair. "I'm sorry I made you feel like you had to hide."
I looked up at him, my tears blurring his face. "What happens now?"
He cupped my face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away the tears that had escaped. "Now, we stop pretending. We stop hiding. We face whatever comes together."
And then he kissed me.
It wasn't gentle or tentative. It was desperate, hungry—a release of all the tension, all the secrets, all the walls we'd built between us. I melted into him, my hands fisting in his shirt as he backed me against the counter, his lips trailing down my neck.
"I want you, Lily," he breathed against my skin. "Not as a substitute, not as a contract. Just you."
"Then take me," I whispered. "Take all of me."
The night blurred into a haze of tangled limbs, whispered promises, and shattered barriers. When I finally fell asleep in his arms, I felt a peace I hadn't known in years.
But when I woke up the next morning, the bed beside me was cold. And on the pillow, where his head should have been, there was a note.
*Lily—I have to handle something. Don't leave. I'll explain everything when I get back. Trust me.*
I stared at the words, my heart sinking. Trust him. How could I trust him when the morning light revealed the cracks in our perfect night?
I reached for my phone, my fingers trembling as I typed his name into the search bar. The first headline made my blood run cold:
**Alexander Sterling Spotted with Victoria Hale at a Private Breakfast Meeting—Reconciliation Rumors Swirl.**
