Chapter 5: The Devil's Terms
The next morning arrived with the brutality of a hangover I hadn't earned. I'd barely slept, every creak of my tiny apartment sounding like Adrian's footsteps, every shadow his silhouette. Lucas had finally drifted off at 3 AM, his tiny fingers wrapped around mine as if he sensed the danger too.
The knock came at 9:07 AM. Precise. Arrogant. So utterly Adrian.
I opened the door to find him leaning against the frame in a charcoal suit that probably cost more than my annual rent. His jaw was freshly shaved, his hair still damp, and his eyes—those devastating gray eyes that had once promised me forever—were cold and calculating.
"You look like hell," he said, pushing past me without invitation.
"Charming as ever." I crossed my arms, watching him survey my cramped living room. His gaze landed on the pack-and-play in the corner, then the stack of baby formula cans on my counter, and something flickered across his face. Pain? Guilt? It vanished before I could name it.
"I've had my lawyers draw up an agreement." He pulled a leather folder from his briefcase and tossed it on my kitchen table. "You'll find it generous."
"Generous." I laughed, but it came out brittle. "You show up after two years, threaten to take my son, and call it generous?"
"Threaten?" He turned, and for a moment, he looked almost wounded. "I'm not threatening you, Mia. I'm offering you a choice."
"Some choice."
"Read it."
I didn't want to. But my hand moved anyway, flipping open the folder. The numbers at the top made my stomach drop. One million dollars. Monthly. A trust fund for Lucas that would make him richer than most countries. A penthouse in Manhattan with a nursery already fully furnished.
I slammed it shut. "You think you can buy us?"
"I think you're living in a shoebox with a leaky faucet and a landlord who's two weeks from evicting you." He stepped closer, and I could smell his cologne—the same one he wore when we'd met at that charity gala. When he'd whispered in my ear that he'd never met anyone like me. "I think my son deserves better than this."
"Your son?" My voice cracked. "You didn't even know he existed until yesterday."
"Which is exactly why I'm here now." His voice softened. "I'm not trying to take him from you, Mia. I'm trying to give him the life he deserves."
I shook my head, backing away until I hit the wall. "I won't give him up. I'll fight you. I'll—"
"There's a clause." He nodded toward the folder. "Page four."
I didn't want to, but I looked. And there it was—the offer that made everything else make sense. The trial period. Three months. Me and Lucas moving into his penthouse. Him being a father. Me being...
"What is this?" I whispered. "Some kind of twisted arrangement?"
"It's a chance for me to know my son." He moved closer, and suddenly I was trapped between the wall and the heat of his body. "And for you to see that I'm not the monster you think I am."
"I know exactly what you are, Adrian."
"Then you know I always get what I want." His voice was velvet and steel. "Right now, I want to be a father to Lucas. You can either make that easy—and I mean financially comfortable for the rest of your life easy—or you can make it complicated."
"And if I make it complicated?"
His eyes darkened. "You know exactly how I operate when someone makes things complicated."
I did. I'd watched him destroy business rivals. I'd seen the headlines. The Playboy Billionaire who never lost. And I had nothing—no money, no connections, no family. Just my son.
"What are the rules?" I finally asked.
A slow smile spread across his face. "Rules?"
"If I do this—if I move into your penthouse for three months—I need boundaries."
He tilted his head, intrigued. "Name them."
"One: separate bedrooms. This isn't some twisted version of us getting back together."
"Obviously."
"Two: you don't touch me. Not casually, not accidentally, not ever. Last time I let you touch me, I ended up pregnant and alone."
His jaw tightened. "Fair."
"And three..." I swallowed hard. "When this is over, Lucas and I walk away. Free and clear. No custody battles, no games. You sign over full custody, and you never contact us again."
Silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. I watched him process my terms, saw the war playing out behind those gray eyes. Finally, he nodded.
"Three months. You and Lucas in my penthouse. I get to be a father to my son." He extended his hand. "And when it's over, I'll give you both your freedom."
I stared at his hand. Accepting it felt like making a deal with the devil. But the alternative—fighting him in court, losing my son to a system that favored billionaires—was worse.
"Deal." I took his hand, and electricity shot up my arm. His grip was warm, firm, and dangerously familiar. "But Adrian?"
"Yes?"
"If you break your word, I'll make sure the world knows exactly what kind of monster you really are."
His smile was slow and predatory. "Mia, darling, the world already thinks I'm a monster. The question is—what do you think?"
Before I could answer, Lucas woke up. His cry drifted from the bedroom, and Adrian's expression shifted. Something raw and vulnerable crossed his face—a crack in the armor.
"Is that him?" He asked the question like a man starving for water.
I didn't answer. I just walked toward the bedroom, knowing he'd follow.
Knowing I was making the biggest mistake of my life.
But as Lucas's eyes lit up when he saw me, I realized I'd do anything to protect him. Even if it meant living with the man who'd broken my heart.
Even if it meant falling for him all over again.
*My phone buzzed in my pocket. The unknown number again: "Smart girl. But you should know—Adrian's offer has a loophole. Ask him about the pregnancy clause."*
I froze. The pregnancy clause?
What had I just agreed to?
