Chapter 9: The Island Ultimatum

The private jet hummed a low, seductive lullaby against the endless blue of the Atlantic, a stark contrast to the frantic beat of my heart. Adrian sat across from me, a devastating smile playing on his lips as he swirled a glass of champagne. He’d practically kidnapped me from my apartment at dawn, a whirlwind of whispered promises and warm hands that had momentarily silenced the poisonous voice of that last anonymous text.

*Ask him why he's still hiding you from his family.*

The words were branded into my memory. I’d tried to bring it up, but he’d silenced me with a kiss that tasted of mint and secrets, promising a surprise that would answer everything.

“We’re here,” he said, his voice a low rumble as the plane began its descent.

I pressed my face to the window. Emerald water, impossibly clear, lapped at a crescent of white sand. A sprawling, modern villa, all glass and warm wood, perched on a cliff, overlooking a turquoise lagoon. It was breathtaking. It was a fantasy.

Adrian took my hand, his grip firm and possessive, as he led me down the steps onto the tarmac. A golf cart was waiting, and the warm, salt-tinged air was a balm to my frayed nerves. As we drove along the coast, the silence between us felt heavy, charged.

“This island,” he began, his voice cutting through the sound of the ocean. “It’s been in my family for three generations. A place for celebrations. For… beginnings.”

His words were laced with an intention that made my stomach flip. We arrived at the villa, where a chef and a full staff awaited, but Adrian waved them away. He led me through the airy living space, past a wall of windows that framed the ocean, and out onto a sprawling deck where a table for two was set with white roses.

“Adrian, what is all this?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He took my hands in his, his gaze intense, stripping away all the playboy bravado. “This is for you, Mia. For us.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded document. “This is a copy of my new will. I had my lawyers redraw it this week.”

My blood ran cold. “Your will? Adrian, that’s morbid.”

“It’s not morbid, it’s a promise,” he said, his jaw set. “Everything I own, every share, every asset, including this island, goes to you and our child. You are my priority, Mia. Not some corporate legacy. You.”

Tears pricked at my eyes. He was handing me his world, his entire empire, on a silver platter. It was a grand gesture, but it felt… transactional. A way to buy my security.

“And this,” he said, pulling out another set of keys, “is for a house in the Hamptons. A real home. With a garden for the baby, a nursery with a view of the ocean. I had it designed for you.”

He was checking every box, trying to build a perfect future out of thin air. But the cracks were showing. The anonymous photos, the argument with Elena, his silence about his family.

“Adrian, stop,” I said, pulling my hands away. The words tumbled out, raw and painful. “The other night, Elena. I saw a photo of you two arguing. And before that, you were with her. Are you still hiding me? Is that what this is? You’re trying to buy my silence with a house and an island?”

Hurt flashed in his eyes, raw and immediate. “Is that what you think of me? That I’m trying to buy you?”

“I don’t know what to think!” I cried, the wind whipping my hair across my face. “You show up with grand gestures, but you keep me locked in a gilded cage. You haven’t introduced me to your family. You haven’t said you love me. You’re just… managing me.”

The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the crash of the waves below. He ran a hand through his hair, his composure finally fracturing.

“You’re right,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ve been a coward. I was so terrified of messing this up, of losing you, that I tried to control everything. I argued with Elena because she wanted to leak the news to the press before I was ready. I was waiting for the perfect moment to tell my family, to tell the world, that I’m not the man I used to be.”

He took a step closer, his eyes searching mine. “That man, the playboy, he died the moment I saw two pink lines on that test. I was so scared of my own past that I didn’t know how to tell you that you changed everything.”

He knelt in the sand, reaching into his pocket one last time. This time, he pulled out a small, velvet box. My breath hitched.

“Mia,” he said, his voice cracking. “I don’t want you to be with me for the baby, or for the money, or for this island. I want you to be with me because you love the man I am when I’m with you.”

He opened the box. Inside was a ring—a flawless, pear-shaped diamond, simple and elegant, reflecting the fire of the setting sun.

“I’m not asking you to marry me to give our child a name. I’m asking you because I can’t breathe when you’re not in the same room. I’m asking you because the only future I see is one where you’re in it. I love you, Mia. Not the mother of my child. Not the woman I’m obligated to. *You*. Will you marry me?”

The world tilted on its axis. All the fear, the doubt, the anonymous messages—they all seemed to dissolve under the raw, vulnerable truth in his eyes. He wasn’t just giving me his fortune; he was giving me his heart. He had said the words I desperately needed to hear. *I love you.*

A sob escaped my lips, and I nodded, tears streaming down my face. “Yes,” I whispered. “Yes, Adrian.”

The smile that broke across his face was blinding. He slid the ring onto my finger and stood, pulling me into a fierce embrace just as my phone, still in my jacket pocket, buzzed against my hip. I ignored it, melting into his kiss.

But a moment later, I felt the buzz again. And again. A frantic, insistent vibration. I pulled back, my heart sinking. With trembling hands, I pulled out the phone. The screen was flooded with notifications.

The first was from a gossip site, its headline a screaming banner: **“PLAYBOY’S SECRET PREGNANT LOVER EXPOSED!”**

The photo accompanying it was of me, leaving a doctor’s office, my hand unconsciously resting on my stomach. My secret was out. The world now knew. And I had no idea who had taken the photo, or what else they were about to reveal.
