Chapter 1: The Taste of Ashes
The ceremonial stones of the Bloodmoon Pack’s courtyard were cold beneath my bare knees. The night air, thick with the scent of pine and anticipation, clung to my skin like a second, unwanted layer. Thousands of eyes were on me, a sea of wolves in their finest pelts, their gazes a mixture of pity, curiosity, and barely concealed contempt. But I only had eyes for him.
Prince Kael.
He stood at the head of the sacred circle, a monument of power carved from moonlight and shadow. His black hair was swept back, revealing the sharp, brutal angles of his face. His eyes, the color of molten gold, swept over the crowd with the lazy arrogance of a king, before finally landing on me. A flicker of something—disgust?—crossed his features before it was gone.
My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone and hope. This was it. The moment that would bind our souls for eternity. The moment I, Aria, the pack’s designated omega, would become the Luna of the most powerful pack in the realm. For seven years, I had loved Kael from the shadows. For seven years, I had dreamed of this night.
He stepped forward, his boots crunching on the gravel. The scent of him—cedarwood and wild thunder—was overwhelming. It was the scent of my future, my destiny. I reached out, my fingers trembling, to touch the hem of his ceremonial cloak.
He flinched.
The movement was subtle, but it was a seismic shift in my universe. A ripple of whispers went through the crowd. I snatched my hand back, a hot flush of shame creeping up my neck.
Kael stopped before me, his presence a physical force that made it hard to breathe. He was so beautiful, so untouchable. And he was mine. He was supposed to be mine.
"Aria, of the Bloodmoon Pack," his voice boomed, silencing the whispers. It was a voice that commanded armies, a voice that could start and end wars. It was not a voice of love.
I bowed my head, a tear slipping down my cheek. I was just so full of emotion, so overwhelmed by the reality of this moment.
"I, Kael, Alpha Prince of the North, have come to claim my fated mate."
My heart soared. *Yes. Yes!* I looked up, a smile blooming on my lips. He was going to say it. He was going to mark me. Our souls were about to be intertwined.
But his eyes were cold. Colder than the winter winds that howled through the mountains.
"I have come to perform the Rite of Rejection."
The words didn't make sense at first. They were just sounds, foreign and jagged, that shattered the beautiful dream I was living in. The smile froze on my face. The crowd gasped, a collective intake of breath that was louder than any thunderclap.
"What?" I breathed, the sound barely a whisper.
Kael’s lips curled into a cruel smirk. He looked down at me, and in his eyes, I saw not the love I had cherished in my heart, but a deep, abiding revulsion.
"Don't play the fool, omega," he spat, the title a venomous hiss. "You think I would ever willingly bind myself to you? To a creature of your… station?"
He gestured to me, to my simple, worn dress, to my trembling hands, to the very essence of who I was. "You are nothing. A gutter rat I had the misfortune of being fated to. Your blood is weak, your spirit is weaker, and your very presence taints the purity of my lineage."
Each word was a knife, plunging into my chest with surgical precision. My wolf, my sweet, trusting Luna, whimpered inside me, collapsing in on herself. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening.
"Please, Kael," I begged, my voice cracking. I didn't care about the thousands of people watching. I didn't care about my pride. All I cared about was him. "Please, don't do this. I love you. I've always loved you. I can be better. I can be worthy."
"Worthy?" He laughed, a harsh, grating sound devoid of any humor. "You are the most unworthy creature I have ever laid eyes on. Your presence here is an insult to the Moon Goddess herself."
He turned to the Alpha, my own father, who stood stiff and silent, his face a mask of stone. My mother was sobbing softly, but she made no move to defend me. No one did.
"The Rite is complete," Kael declared, his voice ringing with finality. "I, Kael, reject you, Aria, as my fated mate. I sever the bond that was forced upon me. From this moment forward, you are nothing to me. You are less than nothing."
A searing pain exploded in my chest, a white-hot agony that stole my breath. I felt the invisible, shimmering thread that had connected my soul to his for years snap with a sound I felt more than heard. It was the sound of my heart being ripped from my body. I screamed, a raw, primal sound of pure anguish, and collapsed onto the cold stones, clutching my chest.
The pack erupted. Some were cheering, celebrating the Alpha Prince’s wisdom. Others were mocking, their laughter like shards of glass in my ears.
"Worthless omega!"
"Did she really think he'd choose her?"
"Pathetic."
Kael turned his back on me. The dismissal was worse than the rejection. It was a final, brutal confirmation that I was nothing to him. He began to walk away, flanked by his royal guard.
"Wait," I croaked, my voice a broken thing. I pushed myself up on my hands, my body trembling violently. "My mark. You have to… you have to take my mark."
To truly sever a bond, the mark had to be ritually removed. It was the final humiliation, the last act that would strip me of any claim to him.
Kael paused, glancing over his shoulder. His gaze was utterly devoid of emotion. "I don't need to touch you to erase you. You are already gone from my heart, if you were ever there to begin with."
He flicked his fingers, a dismissive gesture. "Alpha, do with her what you will. She is no longer my concern."
He walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the castle, taking my heart, my soul, and my future with him.
My father’s voice was cold and final. "Aria, you are hereby banished from the Bloodmoon Pack. You are stripped of your name and your lineage. You are nothing. Leave these lands by sunrise, and never return."
The world swam before my eyes. The pain in my chest was nothing compared to the vast, empty void that had opened up inside me. I was alone. Rejected. Banished. An omega without a pack, a mate, or a home.
As the crowd dispersed, leaving me broken and bleeding on the cold, unforgiving ground, a single, terrifying thought crystallized in my shattered mind.
This was not the end.
This pain would forge me. Their cruelty would be my fuel. And one day, when I was no longer the weak, worthless omega they had cast aside, I would make them all pay. Every single one of them.
Starting with the Prince who had broken me.
