Chapter 3: The Moonstone Legacy
The air inside the cave was thick with the scent of ancient earth and something else—something that smelled like ozone and moonlit petals. My bare feet pressed against stone worn smooth by centuries of water, and I realized I wasn't shivering anymore. The cold that had seeped into my bones during my desperate flight through the Silvermoon territory had vanished, replaced by a warmth that pulsed from somewhere deep in my chest.
This place knew me. Somehow, impossibly, it had been waiting for me.
I followed the silver light deeper into the cavern, my hands trailing along walls etched with symbols I'd never seen before but somehow understood. They told a story—a prophecy written in a language older than the packs, older than the Moon Goddess's gift of the wolf spirit. My fingers traced the spiraling patterns, and images flashed behind my eyes: a woman with hair like starlight, a wolf with fur the color of moonbeams, a crown of thorns and silver, and a heart breaking under the weight of rejection.
*The last of her line will come when the moon bleeds silver and the alpha's heart turns cold. She will be cast out, forgotten, and only then will she find her true inheritance.*
I stumbled back from the wall, my breath catching in my throat. The howls outside grew louder—they'd reached the base of the mountain now, their voices raised in furious hunting cries. I could hear Damon's voice among them, sharp with command, and the sound of it twisted something inside me. He'd marked me, claimed me, and then cast me aside in front of his entire pack. The mate bond still hummed beneath my skin like a wound that wouldn't heal, but I pushed it down. I had to move.
The cavern opened into a vast chamber, and I froze at the threshold.
At the center, rising from a pool of crystalline water, stood a stone altar carved with the same spiral patterns. But it was what rested on top of the altar that stole my breath: a glowing stone the size of my fist, pulsating with a light that seemed to breathe. It was the color of moonstone, but alive somehow, shifting between silver and pearl and something that looked almost like molten starlight.
I walked toward it without meaning to, my feet carrying me forward as if the stone itself was calling me. The pool rippled as I approached, and I realized with a jolt that the water wasn't reflecting my image—it was showing me someone else. A woman with silver hair and eyes like liquid mercury, standing tall with a wolf at her side. The wolf was magnificent, its fur shimmering with the same ethereal light as the stone, and it looked at me with ancient knowledge in its gaze.
"The Moonstone heir," I whispered, the words falling from my lips as if I'd always known them.
The howls outside shook the cave walls, and I heard Damon's voice, closer now, snarling orders. "Find her! She can't have gone far—the cliff face is solid stone!"
But they were wrong. This cave wasn't solid stone—it was a sanctuary, hidden from the pack for centuries, waiting for the one who was meant to find it. And that one was me.
I reached out and touched the stone.
The world exploded into light.
Power slammed into me like a tidal wave, and I cried out as something ancient and wild surged through my veins. My blood burned, my bones ached, and I felt something stirring in the depths of my soul—something that had been sleeping for nineteen years, locked away by a spell cast before I was born. The Moonstone had been waiting for me, but more than that, it had been holding something for me. Something that belonged to me by right of blood.
*Aria,* a voice whispered in my mind, soft as moonlight on water. *It's time to wake up.*
I fell to my knees as the transformation hit me. My body convulsed, my bones shifting and reforming, my skin rippling with silver fur that erupted from my pores. The pain was exquisite, overwhelming, and yet through it all I felt a joy so profound it brought tears to my eyes. I'd been told my whole life that I was wolf-less, defective, a servant meant to be used and discarded. But they'd been wrong. So wrong.
When the transformation completed, I opened my eyes and saw the world through new senses. My wolf was magnificent—a creature of silver and moonlight, with eyes that glowed like the stone that had awakened me. I felt her presence in my mind, warm and fierce and utterly devoted.
*I am Lyra,* she said, her voice like wind through silver leaves. *The last of the Moonstone wolves. And I am yours, Aria. Forever.*
I wanted to weep with relief, to run through the forest and howl my joy to the stars. But the howls outside were closer now, desperate and angry. Damon's voice cut through the cave like a blade.
"She's in there! I can smell her—wait. That scent. It's different. What is she?"
I turned toward the cave entrance, my new wolf senses picking up the sounds of the pack approaching. They were coming for me—Damon and his warriors, ready to drag me back to face whatever punishment he deemed fit for a rejected mate who dared to run. They thought they'd find the same weak, wolf-less girl they'd always known.
But I wasn't that girl anymore.
*Lyra,* I said, feeling my wolf's fierce agreement. *Let's show them what they've been missing.*
The cave walls shook with the force of my howl as I launched myself toward the entrance. The pack was about to learn that the Moonstone Legacy wasn't just a legend. It was coming for them, and it was wearing my face.
And Damon, the Alpha Prince who'd rejected me in front of his entire pack, was about to discover that the mate he'd thrown away had become something far more powerful than he could ever dream of being.
The first warrior's face appeared in the cave entrance, eyes wide with shock at the sight of me.
I smiled with Lyra's sharp teeth.
*Hello, Silvermoon,* I thought. *Time to play.*
