Chapter 9: The Blood of the Moon
The wild wolves moved like shadows, their grey and silver coats blending with the night. I ran with them, my bare feet pounding against the cold earth, the scent of pine and blood filling my lungs. My heart thrummed with a wildness I hadn’t known I possessed—a freedom that felt both foreign and right. The chains Darius had put on me were gone, but the phantom weight still lingered on my wrists. I shook them out as I ran, feeling the cool night air kiss my skin.
We crested the ridge overlooking the battlefield. Below, chaos reigned. Darius’s rogues clashed with Kael’s warriors, steel and fang and claw. The air was thick with growls and screams. And in the center of it all, a whirlwind of black fur and golden eyes—Kael. He tore through his enemies like they were made of paper, his rage palpable, his grief a living thing that pulsed with every strike.
I saw the moment he sensed me. His head snapped up, his eyes finding mine across the distance. And in that gaze, I saw a thousand emotions warring for dominance: relief, fury, fear, and something deeper—something that made my chest ache. *Mine.*
“Ava!” His voice was a thunderclap that shook the very ground.
Darius, standing atop a rocky outcrop, turned at the sound. His lip curled when he saw me flanked by the wild wolves. “So the little mate has found herself a pack of mutts. How fitting.”
I bared my teeth, feeling the shift ripple through me—my bones cracking, my senses sharpening. For the first time, I welcomed the change. My wolf surged forward, and I let her take over. I was no longer just Ava the human, the unexpected mate. I was a she-wolf, and I was done running.
I launched myself down the slope, the wild wolves at my side. We hit Darius’s line like a battering ram. The rogues faltered, surprised by the sudden assault from the rear. I used their confusion, ripping and tearing with a ferocity I didn’t know I possessed. Every scar he’d given me, every moment of fear and shame—I poured it all into each strike.
Then Kael was there.
He appeared beside me like a specter, his massive black form cutting through the fray. Our shoulders brushed, and a jolt of electricity shot through me. The bond between us, strained and fractured, began to knit itself back together. His growl rumbled through my chest, and I answered with my own.
“Together,” he said, his voice a low growl in my mind.
“Always,” I replied.
We moved as one. Where he struck, I followed. Where I lunged, he covered. It was a dance of death, our movements synchronized as if we’d been fighting side by side for centuries. The rogues fell before us like wheat before a scythe. The wild wolves howled their approval, sensing the shift in momentum.
Darius watched from his perch, his face twisted with rage. “Enough!” He leaped down, landing between us and the remnants of his forces. His eyes glowed with an unholy light. “You think your love conquers all? You’re nothing but a prophecy’s puppet.”
“The prophecy,” Kael snarled, “is just a story. *She* is my reality.”
Darius laughed, a cold, brittle sound. “Then let’s rewrite the ending.”
He lunged at Kael with blinding speed. The two alphas clashed, a hurricane of black and grey. I circled, looking for an opening, but they were too fast, too brutal. I saw Kael land a blow, saw Darius stagger. But then Darius feinted, and his claws raked across Kael’s chest, drawing a spray of crimson.
Kael stumbled, his breath ragged. The wound was deep, too deep. He went to his knees, and Darius loomed over him, victory glinting in his eyes.
“No!” I screamed, throwing myself between them. Darius’s claws swung toward me, but I caught his arm, my grip iron. “You will not touch him.”
Darius’s eyes widened, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his face. “What are you?”
I didn’t know. I only knew that my blood was singing, my veins burning with a light that had no name. I pushed against him, and he stumbled back, a crack running through his arm. The wild wolves closed in, and for the first time, I saw fear in Darius’s eyes.
“Finish it,” Kael rasped from behind me.
But I didn’t need to. Darius turned to flee, and the wild wolves were on him. His scream was cut short, swallowed by the night.
I fell to my knees beside Kael, my hands pressing against the gash in his chest. The blood was hot, too much. “Stay with me,” I pleaded. “Please.”
His eyes fluttered open, their golden glow dimming. “Ava… the prophecy…”
I remembered the words. *The mate’s blood shall be the cure.* Without hesitation, I dragged my claws across my palm and pressed it to his wound. The blood sizzled, steam rising, and Kael gasped. The gash began to close, the flesh knitting together under my touch.
When the wound was sealed, he sat up, his eyes wide. “You… you saved me.”
I looked at my hand, already healed, and felt the weight of something ancient settle over me. “No,” I whispered. “We saved each other.”
Above us, the moon broke through the clouds, bathing us in silver light. And in that moment, I knew our story was only just beginning.
