Chapter 9: Blood and Moonfire
The war horn blared, a guttural sound that shook the very stones of the stronghold. I felt the vibration in my bones, a primal dread that was quickly drowned by a surge of adrenaline. The first wave of enemy wolves crashed against our outer defenses like a living tide of fur and fangs.
Kael shifted instantly, his massive black form eclipsing the torchlight. He let out a roar that was both command and challenge, and our pack answered. Wolves poured from the keep, their snarls a symphony of defiance. I stood frozen for a heartbeat, the scent of blood and fear thick in the air.
*Then I moved.*
I didn't think. I just ran, my body remembering the training Kael had insisted on. I ducked under a swinging claw, rolled, and came up with a dagger I hadn't realized I'd drawn. The enemy wolf’s eyes widened in surprise as I slashed across his hamstring, sending him crashing to the ground.
“Elara!” Kael’s voice, a mental snarl, cut through the chaos. *“Get to the inner keep!”*
*No.* I sent back, the word fierce. *I’m not hiding.*
I saw him, a black blur, fighting his way toward me. He was a force of nature, each swipe of his claws sending enemies flying like ragdolls. But for every one he felled, two more took their place. They were relentless, driven by a singular purpose.
And then I saw him. The Alpha of the rival pack. He was enormous, a silver-grey beast with eyes the color of cold, dead ash. He stood on a rise of rubble, watching the carnage with a detached amusement. His gaze found mine, and a cruel smile stretched his maw.
That’s when I felt it. A pull, deep in my chest, like a hook snagging my very soul. The silver pendant Kael had given me burned against my skin, growing so hot I thought it would sear through my shirt. The enemy Alpha’s smile widened, and he started walking toward me, his path a straight line of carnage.
“Kael!” I screamed, but he was surrounded, a whirlwind of violence ten feet away.
The Alpha’s voice slithered into my mind. “There you are, little queen. The power thrumming in your veins… it’s a siren’s call. It belongs to me now.”
He lunged. It was too fast. I knew I couldn’t dodge. I threw my arms up, a futile gesture, and screamed.
The world went white.
It wasn't fear that filled me, but a fire that erupted from my core. A power so ancient and raw it felt like the sun itself had taken root in my blood. The pendant shattered, and a wave of silver light exploded from me, a shockwave that sent the Alpha hurtling backward. He crashed through a stone wall, howling in fury more than pain.
Silence fell for a single, suspended second. Every wolf, friend and foe, turned to stare. I was on my knees, gasping, my hands glowing with a gentle, ethereal light. My wolf, the hidden part of me that had always been dormant, was finally awake. She was not just a wolf. She was moonlight and fury, a force of nature.
Kael’s stunned gaze met mine. Awe, fear, and a fierce, possessive pride warred in his eyes. *“What… what are you?”*
I didn’t have an answer. The light was already receding, leaving me feeling hollow and drained. But the damage was done. The enemy wolves hesitated, their confidence shattered. Their Alpha rose from the rubble, shaking off dust, his eyes now fixed on me with a terrifying, covetous hunger.
“Seize her!” he roared, his voice ragged. “Bring me the queen!”
The battle erupted anew, but now it was different. They were no longer just fighting to win. They were fighting to get to me. Kael fought like a demon, a wall of black fur between me and the advancing horde, but he was being overwhelmed.
“Run, Elara!” he snarled, his thought a desperate plea. “Get to the keep! Now!”
I stumbled to my feet, the world spinning. I wanted to fight, to unleash that power again, but it was gone, locked away as quickly as it had appeared. I was just a girl again, armed with a dagger and a racing heart. I turned and ran, the sound of Kael’s enraged roars chasing me into the shadows of the keep.
I burst through the heavy oak doors, slamming them shut. The sound of claws scrabbling against the wood was immediate. I was alone in the great hall, panting, shivering. The silver light was gone, but I could still feel the phantom heat of it in my veins.
Then, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold. A slow, deliberate clap. I spun around.
Lysandra stood at the top of the grand staircase, a triumphant smile on her lips. “Well, well,” she purred. “The hidden queen finally shows her hand. And what a beautiful, powerful hand it is.” She began to descend, each step a death knell. “Too bad it’s not enough to save you. Or him.”
Through the bond, I felt a spike of Kael’s pain, a sharp, searing lance that stole my breath. He was in trouble. And Lysandra was here, between me and the only way out.
“You see,” she said, stopping a few feet away, “I never needed to kill you myself. I just needed to make you powerful enough for him to want you dead.” She gestured toward the door, where the enemy Alpha’s howl echoed in triumph. “And now, my dear, you’ve sealed your own fate. And your mate’s.”
