Chapter 10: The Weight of a Name

The silence that followed was louder than any accusation. The ring lay still now, a glittering casualty on the cold marble floor. Elena watched Alessandro’s face crumble—a masterpiece of betrayal and disbelief. He didn’t move, didn’t breathe, just stared at the spot where the name had landed.

"Marcus," he repeated, voice hollow. "My brother."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She’d been so careful, so sure, and yet the truth had slipped out in a moment of desperation. "I didn’t know he was your brother when we—" She stopped herself. That was a lie, and they both knew it.

"You knew." Alessandro’s eyes found hers, dark and dangerous. "You knew he was my rival, my enemy, and you let him—" He couldn’t finish. The words tasted like poison.

"It wasn’t like that," Elena pleaded, stepping forward. "Marcus approached me. He said he wanted to expose your company, that you were corrupt, that—"

"That he was saving you from me?" Alessandro laughed, bitter and cutting. "Of course he did. He’s been trying to destroy me for years, and you handed him the perfect weapon." He bent down, retrieving the ring from the floor. "Did you sleep with him, Elena? Tell me the truth."

The question hung between them like a guillotine blade. Elena’s throat tightened. "Yes," she whispered. "Once. But it was a lie. Everything with him was a lie. I thought he was giving me information about you, about the empire that destroyed my father’s business. I didn’t know he was your brother until it was too late."

"I always wondered why my father cut me out," Alessandro said slowly, turning the ring over in his fingers. "Why he chose Marcus to run the European division. Now it makes sense. You were just another pawn in his game."

"Don’t." Elena’s voice cracked. "Don’t make me the villain here. You’re the one who kept secrets. You’re the one who let me believe you were someone else when we met that night."

"Because I was!" Alessandro slammed his fist against the wall. "That night, I was just a man who wanted a drink and a conversation that didn’t involve balance sheets and betrayal. And you were—" He stopped, his anger softening into something raw and wounded. "You were the first real thing I’d felt in years."

Elena’s eyes burned with unshed tears. "And then you walked away without a word. Without a name. I found out I was pregnant alone, Alessandro. I raised our son alone."

"Our son," he repeated, the weight of the words sinking in. "Is he mine, Elena? Or is he Marcus’s?"

The question hit her like a physical blow. She wanted to scream, to throw something, to make him understand. But she’d known this moment would come. It was why she’d kept her distance for so long.

"He’s yours," she said, forcing the words out. "Marcus and I were never—it was one night, and I was so drunk I almost don’t remember it. But Leo—your son—he has your eyes. Your stubbornness. He’s yours. I swear it on my father’s grave."

Alessandro studied her for a long moment. Then, slowly, he crossed the room and dropped to his knees in front of her. He held out the ring.

"Then marry me," he said, voice rough with emotion. "For real. Not a contract, not a bargain. I’m sorry for the way I’ve handled this, for the lies and the silence. But I can’t lose you now. Not when I’ve finally found you."

Elena stared at the diamond catching the light, her resolve crumbling. "I’m scared," she admitted. "I’m scared that this is all too broken to fix. I’m scared that Marcus will use this against us. I’m scared that I’ll fail Leo, fail you—"

"Then we’ll be scared together." Alessandro pressed the ring into her palm. "That’s what marriage is, isn’t it? Two people choosing to face the darkness side by side."

Elena’s breath hitched. A sob escaped her, half laughter, half relief. "Yes," she whispered. "Yes, I’ll marry you."

Alessandro crushed his lips against hers, and for a moment, the world fell away. They were just two broken people, clinging to each other in the wreckage of their pasts, daring to believe in a future.

And then the door slammed open.

Marcus stood in the doorway, a smug smile curling his lips, a manila envelope in his hand. "Sorry to interrupt the fairy tale," he drawled, "but I thought you’d want to see this before you make the biggest mistake of your life."

"What do you want, Marcus?" Alessandro growled, stepping protectively in front of Elena.

"Just the truth." Marcus tossed the envelope onto the coffee table. "I ran a DNA test. The lab results are in."

Elena’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"

"Your son, Elena." Marcus’s smile widened. "Leo. I had his hairbrush tested against mine. And against your fiancé’s." He paused for effect. "Looks like you’re not as sure as you think about who the father is."

Alessandro grabbed the envelope, tearing it open. His eyes scanned the report, and the color drained from his face. Elena snatched it from him, her hands shaking.

The numbers blurred before her eyes. The conclusion line was unmistakable.

Alessandro was not the biological father.

Marcus was.

Elena’s knees buckled. She didn’t feel the floor meet her, only the cold shock of a truth she had never imagined. Alessandro’s hand was on her shoulder, but he was looking at Marcus with a fury that could burn cities.

"You did this," Alessandro hissed. "You planted that evidence. You set this whole thing up."

"I didn’t have to plant anything," Marcus said, his voice smooth as silk. "The DNA doesn’t lie. And neither will the press when I sell this story tomorrow morning."

Elena’s vision swam. Somewhere in the house, she heard Leo laughing, playing innocently, unaware that his entire world had just shattered.

And Alessandro was silent.
