Chapter 10: The Choice
The full moon hung low and fat in the sky, a silver coin that cast the forest in ghostly light. I stood at the edge of the clearing, the ancient stone circle rising before me like a cage of forgotten gods. The air was thick with the scent of pine and ozone, and beneath it all, the wild, heady musk of Kael—my mate, my tormentor, my salvation.
My fingers brushed the cool glass of the vial in my pocket. The black liquid inside seemed to drink the moonlight, a void that promised an end to the curse that had bound my bloodline for centuries. One sip, and I would be free. No more phantom pain from the rejection mark on my shoulder. No more dreams of a golden wolf that was never mine to claim. Just silence. Just freedom.
But freedom came with a price.
Across the clearing, Damien stood with his arms crossed, his eyes burning with an intensity that made my stomach twist. His wolves flanked him, a dozen shadows with gleaming fangs, and behind them, the pack elders watched with faces carved from stone. They had come to witness my decision, to see which path I would walk.
"The curse ends tonight, Ella," Kael's voice rumbled from beside me, low and urgent. His hand hovered near my elbow, not quite touching, as if he feared I would shatter. "All you have to do is accept the bond. One word, and I will sever the dark magic that has haunted your family for generations. I will give you everything."
I turned to look at him. The moonlight caught the sharp planes of his face, the silver streaks in his dark hair, the desperate hope in his amber eyes. This was the Alpha who had rejected me at the Moonrise Ceremony, who had looked at me with contempt and said *"I do not claim you."* And now he stood before me, humbled, pleading, offering me the world.
"You took everything from me," I whispered, my voice cracking. "My dignity. My future. The very life I thought I'd have."
"I know." His jaw tightened. "And I will spend the rest of my days making it right. Just let me try, Ella. Let me love you the way I should have from the start."
Love. The word hung in the air, heavy with promise and poison. I could feel the bond between us, that golden thread that had never truly snapped, tugging at my heart. It whispered of warmth, of safety, of a future where I was cherished. But it also whispered of chains.
"The curse," I said, forcing the words out. "If I bind with you, it ends. But what happens to me? Do I become your property again? Another tool for the pack's legacy?"
Kael flinched. "You become my queen. Equal in all things."
"Says the wolf who once couldn't bear to look at me."
Before he could respond, Damien stepped forward, his boots crunching on the frost-covered grass. "Enough of this sweet talk, Kael. You had your chance and you broke her. Now she has options." He turned to me, his dark eyes glittering with malice. "The vial at your feet isn't the only choice, wolf-girl. Bind with me, and I will give you vengeance. I will burn this pack to the ground, make Kael watch as everything he loves turns to ash. Your tormentor, your rejecter, your *curse*—all gone in a single night of blood."
I looked at Damien. He was handsome in a cruel way, all sharp edges and colder promises. He didn't love me. He never would. But he understood something Kael never could: the intoxicating power of rage. The sweet release of destruction.
"You want me to be your weapon," I said flatly.
"I want you to be your own weapon," he countered, a smirk playing at his lips. "The world has used you, Ella. Now you have a chance to use it back."
The pack elders shifted uneasily. I could feel their judgment, their fear, their desperate hope that I would choose the Alpha they knew. But their hope meant nothing to me. They had stood silent while I was cast out. They had averted their eyes while I bled. They had named me cursed, tainted, unworthy.
My hand closed around the vial in my pocket. The glass was cold, the liquid inside stirring with a malevolent energy. One sip. That was all it would take. The curse would break, but so would any chance of connection, of belonging. I would be a hollow shell, forever free, forever alone.
And then there was Kael's offer. To bind with him, to accept the mate bond that should have been mine from the start. The curse would end, replaced by something far more terrifying: trust. Hope. Love.
"You have to choose," Kael said softly, stepping closer. "But know this: I don't offer you the pack. I offer you me. My heart, my soul, my very soul-baring honesty. I was a fool, Ella. A coward. I rejected you because I was afraid of what I felt—the all-consuming need to have you that terrified me more than any enemy."
"You were afraid of loving me."
"Yes." He swallowed hard. "And that was the greatest failure of my life."
I heard Damien scoff behind me, but I ignored him. My gaze was locked on Kael, on the raw vulnerability in his eyes that I had never seen before. He had stood tall against rogues, against betrayals, against the weight of an entire pack. But here, now, he was laid bare.
The moon above us seemed to pulse, the earth humming with ancient power. The ritual was waiting. The choice was mine.
I pulled the vial from my pocket and held it up. The black liquid swirled, and for a moment, I saw my reflection in its depths—a girl who had been broken, who had been told she was nothing, who had clawed her way back from despair. But was I the girl who would fade into emptiness, or the woman who would rise?
"I reject your offer, Damien," I said, my voice steady. "I don't want vengeance. I want freedom."
Damien's face contorted with fury. "Then you are a fool."
"Maybe." I looked at Kael, and for the first time, I let myself feel the bond—all of it. The pain, the longing, the fierce, terrifying love that had never died. "But I'd rather be a fool with a chance at something real than a weapon with nothing but hate."
I dropped the vial to the ground. It shattered, the black liquid bleeding into the earth. And before anyone could react, I stepped forward and took Kael's hands.
"I accept the bond," I whispered.
His eyes blazed with golden light, and the world exploded into sensation. Power surged through me, raw and electric, as the curse unraveled with a scream that belonged to my ancestors. The mark on my shoulder burned, then healed, then burned again—and through it all, I was held by Kael, his arms wrapped around me like a shield.
But in the chaos, I saw Damien smile. A slow, cruel curve of his lips. And I heard him murmur, "Enjoy your love while it lasts, moon-girl. I've waited a long time to take everything from you—and now, I know your weakness."
The ground beneath us split, and from the darkness below, something ancient and terrible stirred.
The pack had no idea what was coming.
Neither did I.
But as Kael's arms tightened around me and the curse shattered into nothing, I knew one thing for certain: my fight was only beginning.
