Chapter 5: The Golden Spark
The moonstone was a live coal against my sternum, searing through the thin fabric of my shirt. The wind died. The humming in the circle sharpened into a single, crystalline note that vibrated in my back teeth. I tried to pry the stone from my neck, but my fingers were clumsy, numb. The light bleeding from it was no longer the soft, sickly grey of a cloud-covered moon. It was a blinding, electric white, and it was *pulling*.
Something deep in my gut, a place I’d thought was hollow and dead, twisted in response. An answering call. A name I didn't know being shouted into the void.
"Stop it," I gasped, but the words were torn away. My knees buckled. The grass beneath my feet was suddenly too solid, the air too thick. It was like being submerged in honey.
The circle wasn't just humming anymore. It was singing. A thousand voices, all of them my mother's, layered over each other. I saw her then, not with my eyes, but in the space behind my eyelids. Her face, young and fierce, streaked with dirt and tears. She was running, just like I was. But she wasn't running from a monster; she was running *with* one. Her wolf, a flash of brilliant, sun-fire gold, bounded beside her.
*Run, Elara!* Her voice wasn't a sound, but a feeling. A command buried so deep in my blood it felt like a heartbeat. *Don't let them put you in the dark. Find the light. Find the spark. It's yours. It was always yours.*
The vision shattered.
The pain hit me then, a white-hot lance that started in my chest and exploded outward. It was worse than the rejection. This felt like my bones were liquefying, reforming, breaking. A scream tore from my throat, a raw, animal sound of pure agony. I clutched the stone, my fingers bleeding from the pressure, and the light from it surged *into* me.
The world went silent. The pain vanished. I was a single point of awareness suspended in a void.
Then, a pulse. Not mine. A second heartbeat, huge and powerful, thrumming just beneath my skin. It was alien and yet, it was the most familiar thing I’d ever felt. It was *me*. The part of me they said never existed. The part I’d mourned.
I opened my eyes. A shimmering, translucent golden mist was coalescing around my arms, my legs. It wasn't smoke. It was power, given a shape. It felt like liquid sunshine and untamed lightning.
With a final, shuddering gasp, I let go.
The change was not a tearing, but an unfolding. My body wasn't broken and remade; it was *remembering* a form it had always known. Bones stretched, sinews snapped into new alignments, and my skin rippled with a wave of living gold. It wasn't the painful, bloody shift of a normal wolf. It was a metamorphosis. A birth.
Fur, the colour of a summer sunrise, cascaded over my skin. My senses exploded into overdrive. The scent of night-blooming jasmine, the damp earth, the lingering, possessive scent of Alpha Kael on the wind—I could taste them all. I could hear a rabbit’s heartbeat a mile away. My new eyes, vast and amber, saw the world in a spectrum of heat and life.
I stood on four powerful paws, my head reaching the centre of the stone circle. The moonstone at my neck was no longer burning. It was pulsing with a soft, warm light, in perfect rhythm with my new heart. I was a wolf. A golden beast, alien and beautiful, that no one in the Silver Pack had ever seen.
A guttural laugh, more of a snarl, rumbled from my chest. I was not the weak, rejected runt. I was a creature of legend, born from the curse that was meant to destroy me.
The moment of triumph was fleeting.
The vision returned, sharper this time. Not of my mother running, but of her kneeling. A dark cave, the scent of iron and decay. She was clutching her stomach, her golden fur matted with blood. Across from her, a figure shrouded in impossible shadow, its eyes glowing like twin furnace fires.
"You cannot hide her power from me, Luna Elara," the figure hissed, its voice a discordant chorus of screeching metal and falling stones. "The blood of the Sun-Moon is a leash. You have bound her to the stone so she may never fully awaken. But I have other plans for her."
My mother spat blood. "The Moonstone is her key, not her cage. It will awaken her when her heart is true. You will not have her, Blackwood."
The creature laughed, a sound that curdled the blood in my new veins. "The heart is a fragile thing, Elara. Easily broken. Easily led. I have a son. And he will be her ruin."
Blackwood. The name echoed in my mind. The Alpha of the Shadow Fang pack, an enemy so old and terrible our pack only whispered about him in stories meant to frighten pups. And he had a son.
The vision dissolved into a sea of static. I was back in the stone circle, panting, my golden fur slicked with sweat.
The curse. My mother had placed a dampening spell on the Moonstone, a barrier to keep my power hidden until it was safe. The rejection had broken me, and breaking the seal of my heart. By removing Kael's rejection, Ella had inadvertently turned the key.
But the vision was a warning. And the final image was of my mother, her eyes meeting mine through time, filled with a desperate, terrifying urgency. *He is coming for you. He knows. Don't let his son in.*
A howl cut through the night. Not a wolf's howl. A creature's roar of pure rage. It was close. Too close. The beast that had been following me had found the scent of my power, and it was no longer hunting.
It was coming to devour me.
I turned, my golden eyes scanning the tree line, my muscles bunched and ready. I was a legend, awakened from a curse. But I was alone, and I had just become the most dangerous prey in the forest.
