Chapter 4: The Gala of Ashes and Gold
The gown was a weapon, and Willow knew how to wield it.
Silver silk clung to her curves like moonlight made liquid, the fabric whispering against her skin as she moved. The bodice was embroidered with intricate frost patterns, catching the chandelier's light and throwing it back in sharp, defiant sparks. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant twist, revealing the delicate column of her neck—a neck that bore no mating mark. Not that anyone would dare question it tonight.
"Damon will be pleased," Mira said, her voice low as she adjusted Willow's train. "You look like a queen."
Willow's smile was cold. "I look like the Luna of the Crimson Fang pack. That's all that matters."
The grand ballroom of the Neutral Territories was a monstrosity of crystal and marble, designed to awe and intimidate in equal measure. Every Alpha from the surrounding territories had been summoned to this gala—a fragile peace treaty brokered after months of border skirmishes. Willow knew the politics would be brutal. She also knew exactly which wolves were likely to challenge her.
But she hadn't anticipated *him*.
She felt him before she saw him. A ripple of energy that slithered down her spine, raising the hairs on her arms. Her wolf stirred, a low, possessive growl building in her chest—a sound she ruthlessly suppressed. She turned, her champagne glass held at a perfect angle, and her eyes met his.
Kane Blackwood.
The infamous Alpha of the Shadowfang pack, dressed in a black suit that did nothing to soften his raw, primal power. He stood frozen on the opposite side of the dance floor, his jaw slack, his golden eyes wide with shock and something that looked terrifyingly like hunger. He'd been surveying the crowd with cold arrogance moments before; now, he looked like a man who'd just been struck by lightning.
And in that frozen moment, Willow felt it too—the ghost of a bond, a frayed and broken thread that pulsed with residual heat. She ruthlessly severed it with a wave of mental will, her smile never wavering.
*You had your chance, Alpha,* she thought. *You burned it.*
"Willow." He was crossing the floor, his strides long and urgent, drawing the eyes of every wolf in the room. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire. "Willow, I—"
"Alpha Kane." Her voice was a blade of ice, perfectly modulated, cutting him off mid-stride. "So good of you to make it. I trust your journey was... uneventful."
He stopped a foot away, close enough that she could smell his scent—pine and smoke, the same scent that had once haunted her dreams. But now, it just made her stomach clench with bitter nausea.
"You look..." He swallowed, his eyes sweeping over her with a desperate intensity. "You look incredible."
"Luna Willow," she corrected, the word a deliberate, venomous dart. "And yes, I know. My mate is very pleased with the reflection he gets from me."
Kane flinched as if she'd stabbed him. It was a satisfying sight.
"He's not your mate," Kane growled, the Alpha in him surfacing, his eyes flashing gold. "I am."
"You *were*," Willow said, her voice dropping to a whisper that only he could hear, sharp as broken glass. "You rejected me. You threw me out like garbage, Alpha Kane. You called me weak. You called me worthless. You made me beg." Her smile was the most beautiful, most terrifying thing he'd ever seen. "And then you let your Beta follow me into the woods to finish the job."
Kane's face went pale. "I never—"
"No, you didn't know. You were too busy with your new girl, weren't you? Your precious, perfect *accepted* mate." She stepped closer, the scent of her perfume—frost and jasmine—mixing with his pine. "But I survived. I crawled out of that river, and I clawed my way back to life. And now, I'm a Luna. A mate. Something you'll never be to me again."
His wolf howled inside her mind—a desperate, agonized sound of recognition. It was the sound of a creature realizing it had destroyed the one thing it was meant to protect. Willow felt it, the echo of that soul-deep cry, and she didn't even flinch.
She'd stopped flinching for him a long time ago.
"You're my true mate," Kane rasped, his voice raw. "My wolf knew it the moment you walked in. I can feel it now. We're—"
"Bonded? No, Alpha Kane." Willow took a sip of her champagne, letting the cool bubbles dance on her tongue. "You burned that bond to ash when you let your mother's prejudice dictate your heart. You chose politics over love. You chose submission over strength."
She turned to walk away, but his hand shot out, closing around her wrist. The touch was electric, a painful, humming reminder of what could have been. She froze.
"Let go of me," she said, her voice a deadly whisper.
"Willow, please. I made a mistake. I was young, my mother—"
"I don't care about your excuses," she said, and this time, she let the Luna's authority bleed into her voice—the full, intoxicating power that Damon had cultivated in her. It rolled off her in waves, pressing down on him like a physical weight. "And I'm not the girl who begged for your scraps anymore. I am the Luna of the Crimson Fang pack, and you will *respect* that or I will have you escorted out of this gala in pieces."
Kane's hand dropped as if burned. He looked at her—really looked at her—and for the first time, he saw the warrior. The queen. The predator she'd become.
And he knew, with sickening, gut-churning certainty, that he had lost her.
"Willow, please," he whispered, his voice cracking. "My wolf is going mad. He's howling for you. He's been howling for you every night since I rejected you. I just didn't..."
"Didn't what?" Willow asked, her head tilting in mock curiosity. "Didn't *feel* it until I was gone? Until I was someone else's?"
A dark, possessive growl rumbled from the shadows behind her. Damon materialized by her side, his arm snaking possessively around her waist, his violet eyes fixed on Kane with murderous intent.
"Is there a problem, Alpha?" Damon's voice was silk wrapped around steel.
Kane's eyes flicked to Damon's hand on Willow's hip, and his wolf snarled—a sound of pure, primal fury. "She's mine."
"She hasn't been yours for two years," Damon said, his smile razor-sharp. "And the pack records show she was never yours at all. You rejected her, Alpha Kane. You signed the decree. Now, I suggest you step back before I remind you what happens to wolves who disrespect my Luna."
The tension in the room was suffocating. Wolves on both sides of the alliance had tensed, hands inching toward hidden blades, eyes wild with anticipation.
Willow didn't move. She let Damon's arm warm her, let his possessiveness shield her from the ghost clawing at her heart.
But as Kane turned and stalked away, his shoulders rigid with fury and grief, she felt it—a jagged, piercing fragment of his pain, cutting through her carefully constructed walls.
And in the chaos that followed, a young Omega, trembling and pale, stumbled into the ballroom, blood streaming from a gash in their side.
"Alpha!" the wolf gasped, collapsing at Damon's feet. "The northern border is under attack! They came out of nowhere—silver weapons, a full battalion!"
Damon swore, his arm tightening around Willow.
And at the far end of the ballroom, Kane turned, his eyes locking on Willow's across the crowd. His lips formed one silent word, a promise that hung in the air like a dagger:
*"Run."*
