Chapter 6: The Bloodmoon Betrayal

The scent hit Willow first—a cloying mix of pine and rot that didn't belong to Silvermoon territory. It slithered through the dense treeline like smoke, curling around the ancient oaks that bordered the northern ridge. Her wolf bristled beneath her skin, teeth bared in a silent snarl.

*Rogues.*

The thought was barely formed when the first arrow tore through the darkness, embedding itself in the trunk inches from her face. The fletching was black. Untraceable. But the magic clinging to the shaft hummed with a frequency she'd felt before—pack magic. Suppressed, twisted, but unmistakably Bloodmoon.

"Willow, get down!" Dante's voice crashed through the night as his body collided with hers, sending them both rolling into the underbrush as a second volley of arrows whistled overhead.

They hit the ground hard, her back pressed against his chest, his arm locked around her waist. Even in the chaos, the warmth of him seared through her. She could feel the steady thunder of his heart—no, that was hers. His was calm. Controlled. Deadly.

"Three on the east flank," she breathed, her senses already mapping the attackers. "Two more circling west. They're trying to box us in."

Dante's lips brushed her ear. "And they're failing." His voice was a low rumble that sent shivers down her spine. "Stay close. Don't let them separate us."

The first rogue broke from the trees—a massive grey wolf with eyes that burned like embers. Not natural. Chemically enhanced. Sophia's work. Willow recognized the telltale glint of silver-coated claws. A direct violation of pack law. Rogues didn't use silver. They couldn't afford it. This was an execution squad.

Dante shifted mid-lunge, his black fur rippling like liquid shadow as he met the grey wolf head-on. The impact sent shockwaves through the earth, and Willow seized the moment, calling on her own wolf. Her bones cracked and reformed, pain lancing through her body, but it was a familiar fire. One she'd learned to embrace.

She was smaller than the others. Faster. Smarter. The rogue on her left never saw her coming until her jaws locked around his throat. He tasted of bitterness and fear—a conscripted soldier, not a true rogue. Sophia had recruited from the lowest ranks. Expendable pawns to die in her name.

*Bastard.*

Willow shook her head, dispelling the rage. Emotion was a weapon her enemies could use. She dropped the corpse and turned just as Kane's voice ripped through the night.

"WILLOW!"

The sound of her name on his lips—raw, desperate, in a way she'd never heard—made her freeze. He was running toward her, his silver-blue eyes wild with something that looked almost like terror. Behind him, a dozen Silvermoon warriors burst through the trees, their snarls echoing through the forest.

But Dante was already stepping in front of her, his massive form blocking her view of Kane. A growl rumbled from his chest—a warning. A challenge.

"You're late, Alpha Kane," Dante said, his voice dripping with steel. "Again."

Kane's wolf surged forward, hackles raised. "What did you do to her?"

"Me?" Dante's laugh was dark and bitter. "Your pack attacked us. Under the cover of night. With silver-coated claws and Bloodmoon-marked arrows." He nudged the black-fletched shaft with his paw, the tip glinting in the moonlight. "You tell me what's happening in your territory, Kane. Because this doesn't look like rogue work."

Silence descended. The surviving rogues had scattered, retreating into the shadows. But the evidence was scattered across the forest floor—bodies, arrows, and a truth that couldn't be denied.

Kane's wolf shifted back, his human form emerging naked and shaking from the transformation. He took a step forward, but Willow raised her hand, stopping him cold.

"I know it wasn't you," she said, her voice steady despite the blood roaring in her ears. "But I also know who gave the order."

Kane's jaw tightened. "Willow—"

"Sophia." The name fell from her lips like a curse. "She broke pack law. She attacked a sanctioned Alpha her mate. The Bloodmoon Council will hear of this."

"You have no proof," Kane said, but his voice was hollow. He knew. He'd always known.

"I don't need proof." Willow stepped past Dante, her wolf still close to the surface. "I have something better. I have the truth. And I'm done being silent."

The air between them crackled with tension. Three years ago, she'd stood in this same forest, watching Kane choose Sophia. Three years ago, she'd walked away with nothing but ash and heartbreak. But now she was different. Stronger. Loved by a man who would burn the world for her.

Dante's warmth pressed against her back, his hand finding hers in the darkness. A silent promise. A declaration of war.

"Bloodmoon will answer for this," Willow said, her voice carrying through the night like a blade. "And Sophia will pay. Not in blood. In something worse."

Kane's eyes widened. "What are you planning?"

She met his gaze without flinching. "I'm going to take everything she loves. Starting with her pack. Starting with her power. And starting with you."

"I'm not hers," Kane said, a note of desperation creeping into his voice.

"No," Willow agreed, turning away. "You're not hers. But you're not mine either. You gave that up the moment you chose her."

Dante's arm curled around her waist, pulling her close. "We're done here, Kane. The next time we meet, it won't be as allies."

He shifted, his wolf form massive and imposing, and Willow climbed onto his back without hesitation. As they disappeared into the darkness, she heard Kane's howl—a sound of rage and regret and something that might have been longing.

But Willow didn't look back. Because behind her, in the shadows of the Bloodmoon palace, Sophia was watching. And Sophia was planning something far worse than a rogue raid.

The covert war had begun.
