Chapter 10: The Impossible Choice

The silver light of the moon spilled through the window, painting Kael's bare chest in shades of wounded pearl. His breathing was even now, the ragged gasps replaced by the steady rhythm of sleep. But I couldn't rest. Not when the weight of my decision pressed down on my chest like a gravestone.

I had saved him. I had given everything—the freedom of every wolf in the territory—to pull him back from the brink. And now, as I traced the dark veins that still lingered faintly beneath his skin, I knew the true price was yet to be paid.

The air in the room shifted. Cold. Deliberate.

"You feel it, don't you?" Doran's voice came from the shadows by the window, low and laced with something ancient. "The prophecy isn't finished, Elara. It's barely begun."

I spun, my heart slamming against my ribs. He stood there, cloaked in midnight, his silver eyes reflecting the moon like twin pools of molten mercury. His face was impossible to read—a mask carved from centuries of secrets.

"What are you talking about?" I whispered, careful not to wake Kael.

Doran stepped closer, each footfall silent. He gestured to the mark on my chest—the faint crescent that had appeared when I bound my life force to Kael's. "The Moon Goddess's covenant requires a life for a life. You gave yours to him, but that only completed half the ritual. The other half... demands a sacrifice."

My blood turned to ice. "I already gave everything. My freedom. My future."

"No." He shook his head slowly, his eyes boring into mine. "You gave *his* freedom. The ritual that would sever the Alphas' control over the pack—the one that would break Seraphina's hold for good—requires a willing death. A soul pure enough to be accepted by the Moon herself."

The words hung in the air like frost.

"You're saying..." I swallowed, my throat suddenly dry. "To free my people, I have to die."

Doran didn't blink. "The prophecy speaks of a wolf of two bloods, one who can bridge the divide between humans and our kind. She must sacrifice herself in the sacred grove beneath the blood moon, offering her essence to the Moon Goddess. Only then will the chains of the Alpha curse be shattered forever."

I stared at him, the weight of the truth crushing me. "And if I don't?"

"Then Seraphina will consolidate her power. She'll hunt down every wolf who ever dared to question her rule. She'll tear Kael apart—slowly—and make you watch. The prophecy doesn't just offer salvation, Elara. It offers the *only* path to stopping her."

My hands trembled. I looked down at Kael—at the man I had once thought was my enemy, who had become my sanctuary. He was strong, fierce, and now he was bound to me through a magic that had rewired the very fabric of our souls. To leave him would be to tear myself in two.

But to stay... to stay meant condemning every wolf in the territory to a lifetime of servitude under Seraphina's iron fist.

"There has to be another way," I said, my voice breaking.

Doran's eyes softened, just slightly. "I've searched for centuries, child. There is no other way. The Moon Goddess demands balance. Life for life, sacrifice for salvation. Your death will be the key that unlocks the chains of the entire pack."

I felt tears prick at my eyes. "And Kael? What happens to him?"

"He'll live," Doran said, his voice barely above a whisper. "He'll wake up in a world where the Alphas hold no power, where wolves are free to make their own choices. He'll grieve you. He'll rage against the heavens. But he'll survive."

I squeezed my eyes shut, the tears slipping down my cheeks. The choice was impossible. Stay with the man I'd come to love—my mate, my equal—and watch everything burn? Or leave him to be free, knowing I'd never feel his touch again?

"What if I refuse?" I asked, my voice hollow. "What if I choose him?"

Doran was silent for a long moment. "Then you'll live. You'll have your mate, your bond, your love. And you'll watch as Seraphina strips away everything else. One by one, she'll take your friends. Your family. The innocents who look to you for protection. And when she's done, she'll take you too—but not before she makes Kael suffer for the crime of loving you."

His words carved into me like claws.

"No pressure," I whispered, a bitter laugh escaping my lips.

Doran stepped closer, placing a hand on my shoulder. The touch was cold, but not unkind. "You have until the blood moon, Elara. Three nights. Choose wisely."

The shadows seemed to swallow him whole, and then he was gone.

I stood in the moonlit room, alone with my sleeping mate and the impossible weight of a prophecy that demanded everything from me.

Three nights.

I moved to the window, pressing my forehead against the cold glass. The pack lands stretched out below, silent and vulnerable. Somewhere out there, Seraphina was planning her next move. And somewhere in the sacred grove, the Moon Goddess waited to claim my soul.

Kael stirred in the bed behind me. "Elara?" His voice was groggy, thick with sleep. "What's wrong?"

I turned, forcing a smile onto my lips. "Nothing. Go back to sleep."

He reached for me, his hand warm and familiar. "Come here."

I hesitated for a heartbeat, then climbed back into bed beside him. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me close. So warm. So safe.

But the warmth couldn't reach the ice in my heart.

As Kael's breathing evened out again, I stared at the ceiling. The mark on my chest pulsed faintly, a reminder of the bond we shared. And I knew, with a certainty that shattered me, that I couldn't let Seraphina win.

Three nights.

I had three nights to love him enough for a lifetime.

And when the blood moon rose, I would have to let him go.
