Chapter 1: The Burning Brand

The sacred clearing was silent, save for the crackle of ceremonial torches and the thunder of my own frantic heart. Thousands of Crescent Moon Pack wolves watched, their eyes gleaming like scattered stars in the twilight. My skin prickled with the weight of their stares, my wolf, Luna, whimpering a nervous, hopeful tune in the back of my mind. Tonight, under the full moon, my mate-bond with Alpha Kael would be sealed.

I smoothed the white ceremonial gown, the fabric soft and cool against my feverish skin. My gaze found him at the altar, standing beneath the ancient oak draped in moonflowers. Kael. My future. Six-feet-four of raw, predatory power, with eyes the color of a storm-torn sea and a jaw that could cut glass. My heart swooned, as it always did. For two years, we had been promised to each other. I had loved him from the moment I understood what love was. Tonight, he would make me his Luna.

He did not look at me. That was the first wrong note.

His Beta, Rydan, stood rigid beside him, his face a mask of stone. The Elders, seated on their carved thrones, were grim-faced. A cold tendril of unease snaked down my spine. I pushed it away. This was my night. The night I would finally feel his lips on mine, taste the claim in his mark.

I reached the altar, dipping my head in respect. "Alpha Kael," I whispered, my voice trembling with a joy I couldn't contain.

When he finally looked at me, the cold in his eyes stopped my heart. It was not the gaze of a man seeing his mate. It was the gaze of a wolf sizing up prey.

"Luna Gray," his voice boomed, silencing the whispers of the crowd. It was not a term of endearment; it was a condemnation. "You stand before this pack, before the Moon Goddess herself, under the pretense of being my fated mate."

A gasp rippled through the crowd. My blood went glacial. "Kael… what are you—"

He sneered, a look of pure disgust twisting his handsome features. "Save your pathetic act. I have felt the bond. It is weak. A fragile tether. A mistake." He turned to the pack, spreading his arms wide. "I have found my true mate! Not this… this servant girl, raised out of pity by the previous Alpha."

The world tilted. Pity. The word echoed in the silence, crueler than any blow. My parents had been Alpha and Luna before their death. They were not pity. They were legacy.

Rydan stepped forward, pulling a girl from behind the elders. My breath hitched. It was Opal. My own handmaiden. She was beautiful, with raven hair and dewy, innocent eyes, casting a triumphant, venomous glance my way.

"Opal," Kael declared, pulling her to his side. "She is my true mate. Her bloodline is pure, her wolf strong. She will be my Luna."

The pack erupted. Shouts of disbelief, some of approval, but most of pure, scandalized shock. I was a fixture of the pack, the daughter of their beloved former Alpha. And now, I was being cast aside like a piece of garbage.

"Kael, please," I begged, my voice a strangled sob. "The Moon Goddess chose us. You can't just—"

"I can do whatever I want as Alpha," he snarled, his eyes snapping with an unholy fire. "And what I want is to reject you. Here. Now. In front of everyone who needs to see it."

He stepped forward, his power rolling off him in suffocating waves. The bond, that golden thread of light and energy that connected my soul to his, was suddenly a blazing rope that he was gripping tight. I felt it being pulled, twisted, and stretched to a painful breaking point.

"Prepare yourself, Luna Gray," he said, his voice devoid of all emotion. "For the ritual of rejection."

"No," I pleaded, reaching for him. My fingers were inches from his chest when he grabbed my wrist, his grip tight enough to grind bone. The pain was a distant echo to the agony blooming in my chest.

"By the Moon Goddess, who binds us, I, Kael, Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack, sever this bond." His voice was a devil's hymn. "I renounce you. I reject you. You are nothing to me. No longer my mate. No longer a part of this pack."

The final word hit me like a physical blow. The golden thread snapped with a sound I felt in my teeth.

A white-hot, searing pain exploded behind my eyes. It was as if the sun had been detonated inside my skull. I screamed, a raw, primal sound that was ripped from the depths of my soul. My wolf, Luna, howled in a torment so profound I felt her begin to shatter.

I fell to my knees, my body convulsing. The world swam in a blur of tears and the triumphant faces of Opal and the cold, indifferent mask of Kael.

"Get her out of here," Kael commanded, his voice echoing as if from a great distance. "She is no longer welcome."

But they didn't get to. The pain in my head peaked, and a blinding, silver light exploded from my very core. It was not the yellow of a normal wolf. It was the pure, radiant, impossible silver of the moon itself.

The light was so intense it forced the entire pack to shield their eyes. It shot up into the night sky, a pillar of brilliance that pierced the clouds and banished the stars. The ground beneath me began to tremble, and the ancient oak tree groaned as if in fear.

I felt something crack inside me. Not my soul, but a shell. A cage I hadn't known I was in.

Through the tears of agony, I could see the silver light coalescing around me, not as a wolf, but as a shimmering, ethereal form. I felt power unlike anything I had ever known flooding my veins, replacing the shattered bond with a cosmic, untamed river of energy.

My vision sharpened. I could see the terror in Kael's stormy eyes. I could see the fear on the faces of the Elders. I could see Opal's face twisted in pure, unadulterated fury.

And as the blinding light finally began to fade, I felt a command ripple through the pack bonds of every wolf in the clearing, a command I hadn't spoken but that I knew, with absolute certainty, they had no choice but to obey.

*Kneel.*

The word wasn't spoken aloud. It was a psychic decree.

Every single wolf in the clearing, from the lowliest pup to Alpha Kael himself, was forced to their knees.

And as the last of my silver light died away, leaving my body humming with a terrifying new power, I rose to my feet. My white gown was stained with dirt and tears, but I was no longer the girl who had entered this clearing.

I looked down at the kneeling Alpha, my voice a low, terrifying whisper that was heard by all.

"Who did you say I was?"
