Chapter 9: The Curse of the Hollow Crown

The Shadowlands were exactly what their name promised—a realm of perpetual twilight where skeletal trees clawed at a bruised purple sky. The air tasted of ash and old grief, and every step I took sent whispers skittering through the dead leaves like startled insects.

But I didn't stop. I couldn't.

The bond pulled me forward, a silver thread wound tight around my sternum, and with every heartbeat I felt him—Kael. His pain. His desperation. His *need*.

"Foolish girl," a voice croaked from the shadows. I spun, dagger already in hand, but found only a hunched figure wrapped in rags, perched atop a moss-eaten boulder. Her eyes gleamed like twin pools of mercury. "Walking into the Shadowlands for a wolf who rejected you? The Moon Goddess must weep for your stupidity."

"I'm not here for him," I said, though the lie burned on my tongue. "I'm here to end whatever's hunting us."

The crone cackled, a sound like grinding stones. "Hunting *you*, little spark. Not him. Never him."

I stilled. "What do you mean?"

She hopped down from the boulder with unsettling agility, circling me like a vulture. "You think your rejection was simple cruelty? A broken bond?" Her laugh was jagged. "Oh, you precious, naive thing. That rejection was a *curse*—woven from venom and spite, cast by someone who wanted your power for themselves."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "The beta. Elara."

"Elara was merely the dagger." The crone tapped a gnarled finger against my chest, right over my heart. "The hand that wielded her? Ancient. Hungry. It has tasted power like yours before, and it wants a feast."

My wolf snarled within me, hackles raised. "Who?"

"The Hollow King." The crone's voice dropped to a whisper. "A creature of the forgotten age, bound beneath the earth when the first Alpha rejected his Moon-blessed mate. He feeds on broken bonds, on the screams of the forsaken. And now that you've awakened your true nature..." She smiled, showing teeth filed to points. "He's awake too. And he's coming for your crown."

The ground beneath my feet shuddered.

I looked down. The dead leaves were moving, crawling *toward* me, converging like a thousand tiny insects. The shadows stretched, deepening, taking shape—a massive silhouette with antlers like a withered tree and eyes like twin voids.

"Run, little spark," the crone whispered, already fading into mist. "Or become the next course."

I ran.

The forest came alive around me, branches grasping like skeletal hands, roots erupting to trip my feet. The shadow-thing pursued, its presence a suffocating weight pressing down on my soul. My wolf screamed, claws tearing through my fingers as I fought for control, for form, for *speed*.

And then I felt it—a pulse of silver light in the darkness ahead. The bond, blazing like a beacon.

I burst through a wall of thorns and stumbled into a clearing where the twilight was brighter, almost golden. And there, chained to a monolith of black stone, was Kael.

He was worse than I'd imagined. His chest was bare, crisscrossed with wounds that wept black ichor. His eyes, normally the color of molten amber, were dull and glassy. But when he saw me, something sparked. Something *survived*.

"Luna," he breathed, and the word cracked through my defenses like lightning. "You came. You actually—"

"Save it." I crossed the clearing in three strides, dagger in hand. "I didn't come to patch your ego. I came to break whatever curse that thing put on you."

"It's not on me." His voice was raw, scraping. "It's on *you*. Elara—she didn't just want my throne. She wanted your *power*. She made a deal with the Hollow King. Your rejection was the price—the sacrifice that woke him."

I froze, the dagger halfway to his chains. "She sacrificed *our bond* to feed a monster?"

"She sacrificed *you*." The chains rattled as he strained toward me, agony twisting his features. "And I let her. I believed her lies—that you were a spy, that you'd betrayed the pack. But the bond... it was never broken, Luna. It was *poisoned*. I felt you slipping away, and I couldn't..."

The monolith behind him cracked.

I looked up. The shadow-thing had found us. It loomed over the clearing, blocking out what little light existed, its antlers scraping the sky. Its voice was a chorus of tormented howls, and it spoke in a language older than time.

*"The Moon-blessed child... come to me... let me drink your essence... let me wear your crown..."*

Kael's eyes blazed with sudden, desperate fury. "Cut the chains. *Now*."

My dagger flashed. Silver sparked against black iron. The chains shattered.

Kael surged forward, his body colliding with mine as he shoved me aside—just as the Hollow King's claws slammed into the space where I'd been standing. The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the ground, splitting the earth.

Kael's hands cupped my face, forcing me to meet his gaze. His eyes were burning now, alive with a fire I'd thought long dead. "I don't care what I did. I don't care what I said. You are *mine*, Luna. Moon-blessed or not. And I will burn this entire realm to the ground before I let that thing take you."

The Hollow King roared.

And somewhere deep in my chest, the bond—the one I'd thought poisoned, broken, dead—began to *sing*.

But instead of fading, the shadows around us grew darker. The creature laughed, a sound that made my bones vibrate. And Kael's eyes went wide with horror.

"Luna," he whispered, "your mark."

I looked down. The crescent moon on my wrist, the mark of the Moon Goddess, was turning black.

Thorns were spreading across my skin, and I could feel something ancient and terrible writhing beneath my flesh.

*"You're too late,"* the Hollow King hissed. *"She's already mine."*

I screamed.

And the world went dark.
