Chapter 1: The Taste of Embers

The cold kiss of the blade was a mercy compared to the fire in my veins.

They had stripped me of my crown, my gown, and my name. In their place, they gave me a burlap shift that clung to my skin like a shroud, and a crowd that roared with the hunger of wolves. The grand plaza of Valdris had never looked so vast. It stretched before me, a sea of upturned faces, all of them eager to watch a queen bleed.

At the center of it all, a single wooden block. My throne, for the last time.

My hands were bound, the rope biting into my wrists as the executioner’s guards shoved me forward. I stumbled, my bare feet scraping against the cold stone, and a ripple of laughter passed through the crowd. I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper. I would not give them the satisfaction of a whimper.

I lifted my chin and scanned the crowd. There, standing at the front, draped in silks the color of fresh blood, was my husband. King Aldric. The man who had sworn to love me, to protect me, to conquer the world with me. Now, he watched my humiliation with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

And beside him, clinging to his arm like a viper, was my lady-in-waiting. Livia. The woman I had trusted with my life, my secrets, my very soul. The woman who had been feeding poison to Aldric for months, painting me as a traitor, a witch, a whore.

"Any last words, Your Majesty?" The executioner’s voice was a low, oily rasp. He was a huge man, his face hidden behind a black hood, and he held his axe like it was a lover.

A thousand words burned in my throat. Accusations. Curses. Pleas. But they would only be more entertainment for the crowd, more fuel for the fire of my shame. So instead, I turned my gaze to the sky. The sun was a pale, watery disc, hidden behind a veil of grey clouds. A fitting day for an ending.

"I have none for you," I said, my voice steady, though it cracked like old parchment. "But I do have a promise for the gods."

The executioner chuckled. "And what promise is that?"

I looked past him, straight into Aldric’s eyes. I let him see the fury that had been churning in my gut for weeks, the rage at his betrayal, the heartbreak that had curdled into something far more dangerous.

"I will see you all in the next life," I said, my voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd. "And I will make you beg for this one."

A gasp rippled through the plaza. Livia’s smile faltered. Aldric’s hand tightened on the pommel of his sword.

The executioner didn't wait. He grabbed me by the shoulder, shoving me down onto the block. The wood was rough against my cheek, smelling of blood and rain and fear. I closed my eyes.

*Think of the roses in the garden. The first time Aldric kissed me, under the blooming wisteria. The future we promised each other, a future of peace and prosperity.*

It was all a lie. A beautiful, gilded cage of a lie.

I heard the whisper of the blade as it arced through the air. I felt the shift in the air pressure, the kiss of wind against my neck. And then—

Nothing.

Darkness. Cold. The abyss.

I fell, and I kept falling, through an eternity of nothingness. My thoughts dissolved, my name forgotten, my pain a distant echo. I was becoming nothing, merging with the void.

And then, with a force that felt like being born again, I slammed back into my body.

My eyes flew open. I was staring at a low, wooden ceiling, covered in cobwebs. The air was thick with dust and the smell of rotting hay. I was lying on a pile of straw, a thin, scratchy blanket my only covering.

My hands flew to my neck. Smooth. Unmarked. I scrambled to my feet, my heart hammering against my ribs. I was in a small, cramped room, barely larger than a closet. There was a single, grimy window, and a rickety wooden chair.

I looked down at myself. I was wearing a plain grey dress, coarse and patched, with a simple apron over it. My hands were small, calloused, with chipped nails. They were not my hands. My hands had been pale, soft, adorned with rings.

Trembling, I rushed to the window, wiping away the grime with my sleeve. The glass was warped, but I could see my reflection.

A face stared back at me. It was not my face. It was younger, rounder, with a smattering of freckles across the nose. My hair, which had been a cascade of golden silk, was now a mousy brown, pulled back into a severe bun.

"No," I whispered, my voice a stranger's. "No, no, no."

I collapsed to my knees, my body shaking with a terror I hadn't felt even on the scaffold. Was this hell? A punishment for my failures? To be trapped in the body of a servant, in some forgotten corner of the world, while Aldric and Livia reveled in their victory?

I pressed my hands to my face, hot tears finally spilling over. I had been so close to death, and instead, I had been delivered into this… this prison.

Then, a knock on the door.

A sharp, impatient rap. A woman's voice, shrill and grating, called out, "Elara! Get down to the kitchens, you lazy girl! The master is back from the capital and there's a feast to prepare for. A celebration, he says!"

The capital. The feast.

My hands dropped from my face. My tears stopped, as if frozen in my ducts. The pieces clicked into place with a horrifying, exhilarating clarity.

This body. This name. Elara. A maid in a household that was celebrating something.

And what would a lord return from the capital to celebrate?

The coronation of a new king. The man who had murdered his wife and replaced her with his whore.

A slow, burning smile spread across my lips. It was not a happy smile. It was a promise.

The gods had heard me. They had not granted me mercy; they had granted me a second chance. They had taken the ashes of a queen and given them a new vessel, a lowly maid. A maid who could walk the halls unseen. A maid who could get close.

I rose to my feet, wiping the dust from my dress. I smoothed back my hair, my new, plain hair, and schooled my features into a mask of dull obedience.

My name is Elara. I am a servant.

But inside, I am Seraphina. And I am coming for you, Aldric. I am coming for you, Livia. You thought you were rid of me?

You only gave me the perfect disguise.
