Chapter 1: The Devil's Counteroffer
The champagne flute shattered against the marble floor, its crystal shards scattering like frozen tears. I stared at the scene before me—my fiancé, Marcus, his tailored tuxedo hanging open, and my best friend, Chloe, wearing nothing but my grandmother's pearl necklace.
"Eva!" Marcus scrambled off the bed, nearly tripping over his own discarded pants. "This isn't what it looks like—"
"Really?" My voice came out remarkably steady, even as my heart detonated into a thousand pieces. "Because it looks like you're fucking my maid of honor two hours before our engagement party. But please, do enlighten me."
Chloe clutched the silk sheets to her chest, her mascara running in dark rivulets down her cheeks. "Eva, I'm so sorry. We never meant for you to find out like this."
"Find out?" A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "How long have you been planning this little betrayal? Since we were picking out flower arrangements? While I was choosing your bridesmaid dress?"
"Six months," Marcus admitted, and I felt the ground shift beneath my feet. Six months. We'd been together for three years, and he'd been unfaithful for six months. With my best friend since childhood.
The penthouse door burst open, and I spun around, expecting Marcus's security team. Instead, four men in black tactical gear filled the doorway, their faces hidden behind sleek black masks. The leader stepped forward, his eyes cold and calculating.
"Elena Vasquez?"
"What the hell—" Marcus started, but one of the men had him pinned against the wall before he could finish, a silenced pistol pressed to his temple.
I should have been terrified. Any sane person would have been. But watching Marcus's face drain of color, seeing Chloe's perfect facade crumble—a dark, twisted satisfaction bloomed in my chest.
"That depends," I said, meeting the leader's gaze. "Who's asking?"
"Dante Moretti sends his regards." The name hit me like a physical blow. Dante Moretti—the Viper of New York. The man who'd turned the city's underworld into his personal empire. The man my father had borrowed money from. The man I'd been avoiding for months.
"Tell Mr. Moretti I'm otherwise engaged tonight." I gestured at the chaos around me. "As you can see."
The leader smiled, and it was the most unsettling thing I'd seen all evening. "Actually, he's quite aware of your... situation. Says it's perfect timing. You're done here anyway."
It wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact.
I looked at Marcus—at the man who'd promised me forever but couldn't keep his dick in his pants for six months. At Chloe—at the woman who'd shared every secret, every dream, every fear with me since we were twelve. Neither of them met my eyes.
"Fine," I said, straightening my dress. "But I'm keeping the necklace."
I walked out of that penthouse with my head held high, stepping over the shattered glass of what was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. The irony wasn't lost on me—I was being abducted by the most dangerous man in New York, and somehow, it felt like the first taste of freedom I'd had in years.
The black SUV swallowed me whole, its leather seats cold against my bare legs. I didn't ask where we were going. I didn't ask what Dante wanted. The men were silent, and I was too busy rewriting the narrative of my life to care.
Twenty minutes later, we pulled into an underground garage that could have housed a small army. The elevator ride was suffocating, each floor climbing higher into what I assumed was Dante Moretti's tower. When the doors opened, I stepped into a penthouse that made Marcus's look like a studio apartment.
Floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the Manhattan skyline, the city lights twinkling like diamonds scattered across black velvet. A grand piano sat in one corner, its keys gleaming under soft golden light. Crystal decanters lined a bar that could rival any upscale establishment.
And there, in the center of it all, stood Dante Moretti.
He was nothing like I'd imagined. The man who'd built an empire on blood and fear wore a simple black button-down, sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing forearms covered in intricate tattoos. Dark hair fell across his brow, and his eyes—those infamous green eyes that had sentenced men to death—held an unexpected spark of amusement.
"Miss Vasquez," he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through my bones. "I must say, you handle betrayal remarkably well."
"I've had practice." I crossed my arms, refusing to be intimidated. "Though I have to admit, being kidnapped does add a new dimension to my evening."
Dante smiled, and it was like watching a cobra uncoil. "Kidnapped seems so aggressive. I prefer to think of it as a strategic intervention."
"Strategic intervention for what?"
He moved closer, each step measured, predatory. "I have a business proposal. Your father mentioned you're quite skilled with numbers."
"My father's an idiot who gambles away money he doesn't have." I raised my chin. "And I'm not for sale."
"This isn't about your father's debt." Dante stopped inches from me, close enough that I could smell his cologne—something dark and expensive. "Your fiancé—ex-fiancé now, I suppose—owes me fifty million dollars. He promised to pay it back after your engagement party. Something about your trust fund."
The world tilted on its axis. Fifty million. Marcus had access to my trust fund. He'd been planning to steal it all along.
"He's also in my office right now," Dante continued, "begging me to take you as collateral instead."
"He WHAT?"
Dante's smile widened, and I realized I'd walked into a trap far more intricate than a simple abduction. "I told him no, of course. You're worth far more than fifty million to me."
"What do you want?" My voice cracked, the first sign of the emotional wreck I was barely holding together.
"Oh, Elena." Dante circled me slowly, his finger trailing along my collarbone, sending shivers down my spine. "I want you to marry me instead. Consider it a... better offer."
The words hung in the air between us, heavy with implication. Marry the Viper. The man who controlled half the city's crime. The man who could destroy anyone with a single phone call.
"And if I refuse?"
Dante's eyes darkened, the amusement vanishing to reveal something far more dangerous. "Then I'll make sure Marcus gets everything he wants. I'll hand you over to him personally, watch him drain every cent from your family's accounts, and leave you with nothing."
"You wouldn't."
"I'm the Viper, darling. I would." He tilted my chin up, forcing me to meet his gaze. "But here's the thing, Elena. I don't want to destroy you. I want to give you power. Revenge. Everything you've ever wanted and more."
My phone buzzed in my clutch. Chloe's name flashed across the screen. I watched it ring three times before silencing it.
"What's the catch?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"No lies. No secrets. No betrayals." Dante's thumb traced my jawline. "You give me your loyalty, and I'll give you the world. But understand this—I don't share, and I don't forgive. Cross me, and I'll make what Marcus did to you look like a love story."
I should have run. I should have screamed. But somewhere in the wreckage of my engagement day, I felt something click into place.
Marriage to Dante Moretti, the most dangerous man in New York, couldn't be worse than the three years I'd wasted on Marcus. And maybe, just maybe, this was exactly the kind of scandalous, dangerous, magnificent disaster my heart had been waiting for.
"Okay," I said, and the word felt like a key turning in a lock. "Where do I sign?"
Dante's smile was pure sin. "Welcome to your future, Mrs. Moretti." He pulled a contract from his pocket—leather-bound, gold-embossed—and handed me a pen. "But first, there's one more thing you should know about your ex-fiancé."
"What?"
"I already killed him."
The pen clattered to the floor, and the whole world went silent. Dante watched me with those predator's eyes, waiting to see how I'd react to the blood already staining our engagement.
And in that moment, I realized I had just made a deal with the devil himself.
But the truly terrifying part?
I didn't want to escape.
