Chapter 10: The Price of Prophecy

The silence in the throne room was a living thing, coiled and breathing. I stared at the messenger, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs. Lord Adrian. The Alpha King who had rejected me with such cold contempt hours ago, the man who had made me feel like less than nothing, was now standing at the head of my brother's army.

Kael’s hand tightened on his sword hilt. "You're lying."

"I wish I was, my Lord," the messenger said, his face pale. "But I know his face. We all do. He's marching on the capital with the eastern lords. They're saying the prophecy has come to pass, that the King has seen the truth."

"What prophecy?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Kael turned to me, his eyes blazing. "The one that says a child of the moon and shadow will unite the kingdoms or tear them apart. Our court seers have whispered of it for decades. But Adrian..." He spat the name. "He always dismissed it as superstition."

The doors to the throne room crashed open, and a dozen guards rushed in, their weapons drawn. But they weren't Kael's men. They wore the crimson and gold of the Alpha King's personal guard. And at their head, striding with the confidence of a man who owned the world, was Adrian.

He looked different. His usual cold mask was gone, replaced by something raw and almost desperate. His eyes found me instantly, and I felt the weight of his gaze like a physical blow.

"Kael," Adrian said, his voice low and commanding. "Stand down. This doesn't have to end in bloodshed."

Kael moved in front of me, a shield of fury and muscle. "You've already shed blood by marching on my city. What do you want, Adrian?"

Adrian's jaw tightened. "I want to undo my greatest mistake."

The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. I stepped around Kael, my heart pounding. "What are you talking about?"

He moved toward me, and the guards parted around him like water around a stone. He stopped a few feet away, close enough that I could see the exhaustion etched into his features, the shadows beneath his eyes.

"Ten years ago, a seer came to me," he said, his voice rough. "She spoke of a girl with silver eyes and a wolf with shadows in her soul. She said that girl would be my fated mate, but that claiming her would ignite a war that would consume all the kingdoms."

I shook my head, confusion and anger warring inside me. "So you rejected me before you even knew me? Before I even presented as an Omega?"

Adrian's pain was a living thing in his eyes. "I thought I was protecting you. Protecting everyone. I sent you away, thinking you'd be safe, that you'd live a quiet life far from the politics of the court."

"But I wasn't safe, was I?" My voice cracked. "I was sent to the outskirts, treated like a servant, starved, beaten—"

"I know." The words were torn from him. "I only learned of your circumstances a week ago. When I heard you were in the Shadow Court, I knew the prophecy was already in motion. I couldn't let you slip away again."

Kael stepped forward, his hand on his sword. "You don't get to waltz in here and play the regretful hero, Adrian. You humiliated her in front of every noble in the capital. You cast her aside like garbage."

"I know what I did," Adrian said, his eyes never leaving me. "And I'll spend the rest of my life making amends, if you'll let me."

He reached into his cloak and pulled out a scroll, its wax seal gleaming with the royal crest. "This is an official declaration of a marriage contract between the Alpha Kingdom and the Shadow Court. If you accept, Aria, we will be married within the week. The kingdoms will be united, and the prophecy will be fulfilled in peace rather than war."

I stared at the scroll, my mind reeling. Hours ago, I had been at the bottom of a pit, chosen to be a sacrifice to a mythical prince. Now I was standing between two powerful men, both claiming to want me—one for love, and one for redemption.

"And what of your Prince of Shadows?" Adrian asked, his voice hard. "The one who claims to have claimed you already?"

A cold laugh echoed from the shadows behind the throne. We all turned as a figure stepped forward, wrapped in darkness that seemed to drink the light. He was tall, his features handsome but sharp, his eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. And his face was the exact mirror of Adrian's.

"Ah, brother," the Prince of Shadows said, his voice silky and mocking. "How good of you to come and see your failure in person."

Adrian's face went pale. "No. It can't be."

"I told you the prophecy was more than just a pretty tale," the Prince of Shadows said, circling us slowly. "You thought you could outrun fate by rejecting her. But fate has a cruel sense of humor, doesn't it?"

I looked between them—two identical faces, one carved by duty and regret, the other by shadow and vengeance. The Prince of Shadows had been Adrian's twin, the brother declared stillborn to protect him from a rival faction. But he had survived, growing in darkness, waiting for the moment to strike.

Now, he had his moment.

"The prophecy says the child of moon and shadow will unite the kingdoms," the Prince of Shadows said, stopping beside me. "But it doesn't say which kingdom will survive the union."

He extended his hand to me. "Choose, Aria. Choose the man who threw you away, or the man who saw you in the dark and found his light."

Adrian stepped forward, his voice desperate. "Aria, I know I hurt you. But I can give you a throne, a life of privilege, a chance to be the queen you were always meant to be. He offers only chaos and revenge."

The Prince of Shadows smiled, slow and dangerous. "What I offer is truth. And a love that has never hidden from you, even in the shadows."

My heart was a hurricane in my chest. Kael's voice was a distant whisper, telling me to step back, to let the guards handle this. But I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe.

Two brothers. One prophecy. One choice.

And the fate of the entire world hung in the balance.

"What if," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos, "I choose neither of you?"

The Prince of Shadows laughed, a sound that echoed with darkness. "Oh, my love. You already chose. The moment you survived the pit, the moment you walked into the Shadow Court, you were mine."

He reached for me, and Adrian lunged forward—and the throne room erupted into chaos.
