Chapter 3: The Devil’s Bargain

The forest swallowed us whole.

Branches whipped at my face, tearing at the thin fabric of my dress. My lungs burned, but the stranger’s grip on my wrist was unyielding, dragging me deeper into the shadows where moonlight couldn’t reach. Behind us, the baying of hounds grew distant, muffled by the thickening canopy.

I stumbled over a root, and he caught me before I could fall, his body a wall of cold steel against my back. His breath was even, unbothered by our frantic escape. “They’ve lost the scent,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Good.”

I wrenched my arm free, staggering backward until my spine met the rough bark of an ancient oak. “Who are you?”

He turned, and the darkness around him seemed to shift, like smoke curling at his edges. His face was all sharp angles and shadows, his eyes twin voids that reflected no light. He was beautiful in the way a blade is beautiful—dangerous, precise, and made to cut.

“Kael,” he said, the name rolling off his tongue like a secret. “Prince of Shadows. Lord of the Hollow Court. You may choose whichever title pleases you.”

I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. “Another prince. Wonderful. The last one left me bleeding in the dirt. What do you want from me, shadow prince?”

He smiled, and it didn’t reach his eyes. “I want what you want, Aria of the Fallen Moon. Revenge.”

The word hung in the air like poison. I should have run. Every instinct screamed at me to flee, to put as much distance between myself and this creature as possible. But my feet were rooted, my heart racing for a different reason now.

“Revenge is a luxury for those who survive,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

“You survived.” He stepped closer, and the shadows wrapped around his boots like loyal hounds. “You survived the rejection. You survived the Alpha King’s cruelty. You survived the forest, the cold, the blood. You are stronger than you know, Aria.”

“I am nothing,” I spat. “A servant. A nobody. Kaelen made sure of that.”

“Kaelen is a fool.” Kael’s voice dropped, low and velvet. “He saw a wolf and chose a lamb. But I see you for what you truly are—a weapon, waiting to be sharpened.”

I shook my head, wrapping my arms around myself. The night was cold, and my dress was in tatters. I was shivering, starving, and utterly alone in a forest with a creature who might as well have been a dream. Or a nightmare.

“What are you offering?” I asked, hating how desperate I sounded.

He extended his hand, palm up. In its center lay a ring, black as obsidian, carved with symbols that seemed to writhe in the darkness. “Become my consort. Sit at my side in the Hollow Court. In exchange, I will give you everything you need to destroy Kaelen—his pack, his title, his very name. I will make him grovel at your feet and beg for a death you will not grant him.”

My breath caught. It was everything I wanted. Everything I dreamed of in my darkest moments, when I lay bleeding in the snow and prayed to gods who never answered.

But his price…

“And what do you get?” I asked, my voice steady even as my hands trembled.

His smile widened, and for the first time, I saw something ancient and hungry in his eyes. Your soul, Aria. Bound to mine for eternity. You will be my queen, my consort, my eternal shadow. When the mortal world fades from your memory, you will remain at my side, a creature of darkness, forever.”

The forest seemed to hold its breath. Somewhere above, an owl cried out, a mournful sound that echoed through the trees.

“I’d be damned,” I whispered.

“Damned,” he agreed, “and powerful. More powerful than you can imagine. You would never be helpless again, Aria. Never be at anyone’s mercy. You would be the one to show mercy—or withhold it.”

I thought of Kaelen’s cold eyes as he rejected me. The sneer on his mother’s face. The laughter of the pack as I was dragged from the hall. The blood on the snow, the taste of dirt and shame in my mouth.

I thought of revenge.

And I thought of the price.

“If I say no,” I said slowly, “what happens to me?”

Kael’s smile faded. He looked almost sorrowful, which somehow made him more terrifying. “The Alpha King’s hunting party will find you by dawn. They will drag you back to the pack lands, and Kaelen will make an example of you. It will be slow. It will be painful. And it will last a very, very long time.”

I closed my eyes. The tears came, hot and silent, streaming down my cheeks. I had been so foolish. So naive. I had believed in love, in the fairy tale of a fated mate who would cherish me. Instead, I had been offered to a monster.

But now, another monster stood before me, offering my heart’s darkest desire.

“I have nothing left,” I whispered. “No family. No home. No future.”

“You have your rage,” Kael said. “And your pain. That is more than enough for me.”

I opened my eyes. The tears had stopped. Something cold and hard was forming in my chest, a frozen knot of determination.

“Will I remember?” I asked. “When I become… yours. Will I remember what he did to me?”

Kael’s eyes gleamed. “Every detail. Every memory will be a blade you can turn against him.”

I reached out and took his hand. His skin was cold, like winter itself, but his grip was solid. Real.

“Then I accept,” I said. “Make me yours. Give me my revenge.”

His smile returned, hungry and triumphant. “Done.”

The shadows surged up, swallowing me whole.

I felt the world tilt, and then I was falling, falling, falling into darkness. Kael’s voice echoed around me, a whisper that seemed to come from everywhere at once.

“Welcome to the Hollow Court, my queen. The price has been paid.”

And as the darkness took me, I heard Kaelen’s voice, distant and mocking, whispering in my ear:

“You’ll always be nothing, Aria.”

But for once, I knew he was wrong.

I was about to become everything.
