Chapter 3: The Blood Pact

The trial chamber was a cathedral of power. Marble columns soared into shadow, and the air was thick with the scent of old magic and older secrets. The Council of Elders sat in a crescent of carved obsidian, their faces as unyielding as the stone. And at the head, on a throne that seemed to grow from the very floor, sat the Alpha King.

He was even more terrifying up close. The fine, predatory features were the same, but the raw presence was overwhelming. It was a living, breathing pressure that made my skin prickle. His eyes, the color of molten gold, swept over me as I was escorted in, and I felt a strange jolt in my chest, like a lightning strike in a dead sea. I forced myself to meet his gaze. I was a pawn, yes, but I wouldn't be a trembling one.

“Lyra of the Ashwood Pack,” the King’s voice boomed, silencing the murmuring court. “You are here to be bound by the Arcane Oath, to merge your blood with mine and solidify the pact between our people.”

I didn’t speak. Words were a weapon I no longer possessed. The trial was a formality, a cruel piece of theater designed to remind me of my place. A silver goblet was brought forth, engraved with wolves mid-hunt. The King stood, descending from his throne with a predatory grace that made my heart hammer against my ribs. He stopped a mere foot from me, close enough that I could see the faint, silvery scar that bisected his eyebrow.

“Your hand,” he commanded.

I offered it, palm up. He produced a small, wickedly sharp dagger from his belt. The blade was etched with runes that seemed to drink the light. With a swift, efficient motion, he drew a shallow line across my palm. The sting was sharp, and a bead of crimson welled up. I didn't flinch.

He then mirrored the cut on his own hand. His blood wasn't as red as mine; it was darker, richer, almost black in the dim light. He held his hand over the goblet, and his blood fell into the silver basin with a heavy, melodic plink. Then he took my hand, his fingers closing around mine, and guided my bleeding palm over the cup. My blood fell, a bright crimson that bloomed and swirled in the dark liquid.

Our hands were still clasped over the goblet, his grip firm and impersonal. A low chant started from the Elders, the ancient words of binding filling the hall. The liquid in the goblet began to heat, to shimmer.

That’s when it happened.

The moment our mixed blood touched, a violent, searing heat erupted in my veins. It wasn’t the power of the spell. It was something far more primal. It was *him*. A raw, electric current shot from our joined hands, racing up my arm and into my very core. It was painful, a red-hot brand that sought to claim me from the inside out.

A gasp tore from my lips. The King’s head snapped up, his golden eyes wide, not with anger, but with a dawning, horrified recognition. His grip on my hand tightened, his knuckles white. The air in the chamber became thick, charged, like the moment before a thunderstorm.

Then, a sound ripped from his chest. It wasn't a command or a roar. It was a deep, guttural growl. A possessive, territorial sound that vibrated through the floor and into my bones. It was a sound no king should make for a lowly daughter of a disgraced pack. It was a sound of a wolf claiming its mate.

The chant died.

A pregnant silence filled the hall, so absolute that I could hear my own frantic heartbeat. Then, it broke. A wave of whispers, hisses, and gasps swept through the court like wildfire.

“A mate-bond growl…”

“With the Ashwood girl?”

“The Moon Goddess would never…”

“The King is… claimed?”

I stared at the King, my body trembling. His face was a mask of stone, but his eyes were wild, a storm of fury and something else… a deep, burning desire he was desperately trying to control. The growl had been involuntary, a raw tell of his wolf’s instinct. A secret he had guarded for centuries was now laid bare in front of the entire nobility. His weakness. His mate. Me.

The whispers swelled, turning into a cacophony of scandalized chatter. Lord Ardent, a hawk-faced man with a thin, cruel mouth, stepped forward. “Your Majesty! This is an abomination! A trick! The Ashwood blood is weak, tainted! This bond must be severed before it—“

“Silence!” The King’s roar shook the rafters. The power in his voice slammed into the room, silencing every last whisper. He turned his blazing gaze back to me, his jaw tight. He was furious. Not at his court, not at his Council. At me. As if I had chosen this.

“The trial is concluded,” he declared, his voice flat and final. He released my hand, and the loss of contact was a physical ache. He looked at the Elders, then at the assembled nobles. “The Alpha King’s wolf has spoken. The Moon Goddess has chosen. For the sake of the crown’s honor and to prevent any… speculation, this union will be finalized tonight.”

A collective intake of breath.

Tonight. The marriage. The claiming. It wasn't a contract to be honored at a later date. It was a punishment to be endured in a few hours.

The King’s eyes, dark and unreadable once more, met mine. “Be ready, Lyra of Ashwood. You will be my Queen by midnight.”

He turned and strode from the chamber, leaving me standing in a sea of stunned faces. The whispers started again, more frantic this time. I could feel their stares, a mix of pity and disgust. They saw a girl who had somehow ensnared their King, a whore who had used dark magic.

They saw the power. I saw only the trap.

I was to be given the crown I was meant to have, but it was a gilded handcuff. My chaos wasn't a spark I could ignore; it was a wildfire I was being thrown into. He didn't want a Queen, he wanted to silence a scandal. And I, a pawn in a game I didn't understand, was the only piece he was willing to sacrifice.

I looked down at the goblet, the shimmering liquid now still. My blood had mixed with his. Something had irrevocably changed. The mark of the king’s wolf was on my soul. But as the whispers grew, I felt only a cold, crushing certainty. He might be able to bind me in a ceremony, but he would never own me.

As I was escorted out, the final thought echoed in my mind, a promise I made to the haunted look in his golden eyes: *I will be your Queen, my King. But you have no idea who you’ve just claimed.*
