Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Gilded Cage
The black sedan remained a phantom in the periphery—close enough to feel its menace, distant enough to dismiss as paranoia. I let it follow. Let them think I was a foolish girl running from a crime scene she didn't commit. Let them underestimate the woman who had clawed her way back from the grave.
At the penthouse, I dismissed the driver and stood in the marble foyer, breathing in the scent of jasmine and old money. This was my first life's prison. Now it would be my fortress.
I bypassed the ornate guest rooms and went straight to the study—my father's sanctuary, now mine by inheritance. The mahogany desk still bore the faint indentation of his pen. I ran my fingers along the leather chair, remembering the last time I'd seen him alive.
"Father, forgive me," I whispered to the empty room. "I couldn't save you then. But I swear on your memory, I will destroy everyone who took you from me."
My hand trembled slightly as I pulled the hidden compartment beneath the desk. Inside lay the evidence I'd spent two years of my previous life gathering—photographs, bank statements, voice recordings. The truth my stepmother Victoria thought she'd buried along with me.
The doorbell chimed at precisely 9 PM.
I composed myself, smoothing the black silk dress I'd chosen for the occasion. When I opened the door, he stood there—Lucas Chen, the billionaire heir who had betrayed my family, looking as devastatingly handsome as the day he'd helped orchestrate my downfall.
"Evelyn," he breathed, those dark eyes drinking me in with an intensity that would have made my younger self weak. "I heard what happened. I came as soon as I could."
"Did you?" I cocked my head, watching him search my face for signs of weakness. "How touching."
He stepped inside without waiting for permission, his expensive cologne trailing behind him like a warning. "I was devastated when I heard about your father. And now someone tried to kill you—" He reached for my hand, but I pulled away smoothly.
"Someone did succeed," I said, letting my lips curl into a secret smile. "But as you can see, I'm not so easy to get rid of."
Something flickered in his eyes—doubt? Confusion? The Lucas I remembered was a master of deception. But tonight, he seemed almost... unsettled.
"Evelyn, I know you've been through a trauma. But you're talking strangely. Perhaps you should rest—"
"Rest?" I laughed, a brittle sound in the cavernous room. "How can I rest when the person who murdered my father is walking around free?"
Lucas's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "The police have ruled it an accident. Your father's heart—"
"My father had the heart of a lion," I cut in, circling him slowly. "He didn't just collapse from stress. He was poisoned. Slowly, methodically, over months. And I have proof."
The air crackled between us. I watched his mask slip, just for a fraction of a second—a flash of something dark and calculating behind those beautiful eyes.
"That's a serious accusation," he said carefully.
"Which is why I haven't gone to the police yet." I stopped inches from him, tilting my head to meet his gaze. "I need allies. People I can trust. And Lucas..." I let my voice soften, losing my sister's aloofness, "you're the only one I still trust."
His expression shifted to something resembling relief, then guilt. "Of course. I'll do anything to help you, Evelyn. You know that."
"Do you?" I reached up, tracing a finger along his jawline. In my first life, I'd loved this man. I'd dreamed of our wedding, of building a family together. And he'd repaid that love by drugging me and dumping my unconscious body into the river.
But in this life, I would wield that love like a blade.
"Then prove it," I murmured, stepping closer until our bodies were nearly touching. "Stay with me tonight. This house feels haunted, and I don't want to be alone."
Desire warred with hesitation in Lucas's eyes. Whatever plan Victoria had set in motion, he wasn't supposed to be this close to me yet. But I could see his greed winning—the hunger for the Chen family fortune, for the power my inheritance represented.
"Of course," he said, his voice dropping to that honeyed tone I remembered. "I'll protect you. Always."
Always. The last time he'd said that, I'd woken up drowning.
I led him up the grand staircase, feeling his gaze on my back like a brand. We passed the family portraits—my mother's serene face, my father's proud smile, and the one empty space where my own picture should have hung until Victoria removed it after my "accident."
As we reached my bedroom door, I turned to face him. "Lucas, there's something I need to ask you."
"Anything."
"The night my father died... you were with him, weren't you?"
The question hung between us, a blade in the darkness. Lucas's smile froze on his face, and I watched his mind race through lies and alibis.
"Evelyn, you're exhausted. We can talk about this tomorrow—"
"I want to know now," I pressed, stepping into him. "Did you watch him die? Did you hold his hand while the poison stopped his heart?"
His control snapped. "What the hell are you implying?"
"I'm not implying anything." I reached into my dress pocket and pulled out a worn photograph—Lucas meeting Victoria in a private restaurant, two nights before my father's death. "I'm accusing."
The mask shattered completely. Lucas's handsome face contorted with rage, and he lunged for me. But I was ready. In my first life, I was weak. In this one, I'd trained for exactly this moment.
My hand shot out, connecting with his throat, and as he gasped, I slammed a needle into his neck—the same sedative he'd once used on me.
"Sweet dreams, darling," I whispered, watching his eyes roll back.
As his body crumpled to the marble floor, I crouched beside him, pulling out my phone.
"Lucas Chen is secured," I said to the person on the other end. "Now let's talk about Victoria. She thinks she killed me, which means she'll be celebrating tonight. And celebrations are the perfect time for exposing family secrets."
A laugh echoed through the speaker. "What do you need?"
I looked down at Lucas's unconscious form, then out the window where the black sedan still waited in the shadows. They wanted a war.
I'd give them a bloodbath.
"I need the address of Victoria's private safe house. And I need it before sunrise."
