Chapter 1: The Hollow One
The ceremonial fire crackled, spitting sparks into the bruised twilight sky. It was supposed to be the most magical night of my life. The night the Moon Goddess would look upon me, bless me, and reveal the wolf that had slept inside me for eighteen years. The night I would find my mate.
Instead, I was standing in the center of the circle, nothing but the cold wind and the weight of a thousand judgmental stares on my skin.
"Aria Blackwood," Elder Marcus’s voice boomed, rattling the bones of the ancient oaks surrounding the clearing. He gestured with a gnarled hand. "Step forward and receive the Goddess's gift."
My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic, trapped bird. I took a step, my bare feet sinking slightly into the damp earth. The pack’s finest—the warriors, the elders, the eligible females with their shining eyes and sleek forms—surrounded me. Their whispers were a venomous hiss in the air.
"Still nothing after all these years?"
"The Half-Moon. A joke."
"Her father should have cast her out with her human mother."
I clenched my fists, my nails biting into my palms until I tasted copper in the air. *Ignore them. Focus.* I squeezed my eyes shut, reaching for that deep, primal well of power I knew should be inside me. I pictured the moon, full and silver, flooding my veins with light. I begged the Goddess for my birthright—a form of my own, claws and fangs and fur, a connection to the earth and the moon.
A sharp, stinging pain lanced through my skull. My vision swam. The crowd gasped, not in awe, but in a kind of morbid, eager anticipation. My knees buckled. I could feel their disappointment like a physical blow. It was a familiar, hollow ache. Eighteen years of waiting. Eighteen years of praying to a Goddess who had turned her face away from me.
The silence that followed was suffocating. There was no glorious surge of power, no shift, no howl of a newborn wolf. Just me, Aria the Freak, kneeling in the dirt, my body shaking with the effort of holding back the tears that threatened to betray me.
"She is a wolf in name only," a clear, cruel voice rang out. It was Seraphina, the Gamma’s daughter, her silver hair gleaming like a weapon under the torchlight. She was everything I wasn't: powerful, beautiful, and about to have her first shift. Her eyes, chips of ice, found mine across the clearing. "The blood is weak. It should have been diluted properly, but her father was too soft."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the pack. I looked to my father, the Alpha, standing stoic at the edge of the circle. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed on a point somewhere beyond the horizon. He didn't look at me. He never looked at me. The mate-bond that should have united my parents had been a failure, and I was its living, breathing shame.
"Perhaps," Seraphina continued, striding into the circle, a smirk twisting her lips, "we should give her a different kind of gift." She let out a low, mocking howl. "A gift of pity."
The pack roared with laughter. Humiliation was a hot brand on my skin. I pushed myself to my feet, my legs unsteady. I wouldn't let them see me break. I was a Blackwood. My father might have forgotten it, but I hadn't.
"Enough." The word was a low growl from my father, but it carried the weight of the Alpha command. The laughter died instantly. He finally met my gaze, and for a sliver of a second, I saw a flicker of something—was it pain?—before his eyes went hard again. "The ceremony is over. Aria, go inside. We will discuss your… future… in the morning."
*My future.* I knew what that meant. I would be offered as a breeder to a lesser pack, a tool to strengthen their bloodlines. My life, my choices, my very soul—none of it mattered. I was just a failed experiment.
I turned, not to walk, but to flee. I stumbled out of the circle, past the sneering faces and the pitying glances, heading for the cold solitude of my small cabin on the edge of the territory. My chest was tight, my throat raw. I wanted to howl, to scream my rage at the indifferent moon. But I had no wolf to howl with. I was a ghost in my own pack.
I was halfway to the tree line when it happened.
A power, ancient and immense, rolled over me like a tidal wave, so potent it stole the air from my lungs. It wasn't the gentle pull of the moon. It was a command. A summons that bypassed my mind entirely and sank its hooks into the very marrow of my bones. It was a force that demanded absolute, unquestioning obedience.
And it was pulling me *away* from my pack.
My body moved against my will, my feet turning north, toward the Shadowed Wilds—the forbidden territory that bordered our land. The territory of the Lycan King.
*No. No, this can't be happening.* Lycans were beings of myth, monstrous and ancient. They had no packs, no laws. They were rulers of their own, solitary and deadly, and their king was a legend whispered only in fear. He was a creature of pure, brutal power, with no heart, no mercy, no soul.
But the pull was undeniable. A golden thread of destiny, burning and unbreakable, was reeling me in. It was a pull far stronger than any mate-bond I'd ever heard described. It was primal. It was… fate.
My father’s voice echoed from the clearing, sharp with alarm. "Aria! Where do you think you're going?"
I tried to speak, to tell him I didn't know, that I couldn't stop. But my lips wouldn't form the words. The force consumed me, my vision blurring, the world dissolving into a whirlwind of dark trees and howling wind.
The last thing I saw before the darkness swallowed me whole was a pair of eyes—golden and feral, burning with an ancient fire—watching me from the shadows.
And a voice, deep as the earth and cold as a winter grave, whispered inside my skull.
*Finally. You're coming home.*
