Chapter 8: The Devil You Know

The world narrowed to a single point of horror.

Luca’s blood was a dark, spreading stain on the cream-colored rug, his body terrifyingly still. The coppery scent of it filled the air, mixing with the acrid smoke from the shattered window. My scream was trapped in my throat, a silent, razor-sharp shard of glass.

Then, chaos.

The door to the suite didn't just open; it detonated inward, splintering off its hinges. Men in black tactical gear, their faces obscured by balaclavas, poured in like a silent, deadly tide. The first one through the door raised his weapon, but Dante was already moving.

He was a blur of motion, a predator unleashed. He shoved me roughly behind the heavy oak desk, his body a shield between me and the intruders. The roar of a gunshot was deafeningly loud in the confined space, followed by another, and another. I huddled on the floor, my hands over my ears, the cold marble floor chilling my knees through my silk dress. The sounds were visceral—the grunt of impact, the sickening thud of a body hitting the floor, the sharp crack of bone.

It was over in less than thirty seconds.

A profound, ringing silence descended, broken only by my ragged breathing and the soft groan of a wounded man. I dared to peek from behind the desk. Three of the attackers lay dead, sprawled in grotesque positions. Dante stood over the last one, a man he had pinned to the wall with a hand around his throat. Enzo, Dante’s most trusted lieutenant, was checking Luca, his face a grim mask.

Dante’s voice, when he spoke, was a low, terrifying whisper that carried more menace than any shout. “Who sent you?”

The man choked, his face turning purple. “You… you’re too late,” he gasped. “The girl… she was never yours to keep.”

My blood ran cold. *The girl*. Me. I was the target. Viktor’s words echoed in my head. *You chose wrong*.

Dante’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. With a sickening crunch, he snapped the man’s neck and let the body drop. He didn’t even look at it. His eyes, dark and blazing with a fury I had never seen before, scanned the room before landing on me.

“Are you hit?” he demanded, his voice clipped.

I shook my head, unable to form words.

“Enzo!” Dante barked.

“Luca’s gone, Dante,” Enzo said, his voice thick with grief and rage. “He took two bullets to the chest. He didn’t have a chance.”

A wave of nausea hit me. Luca, who had brought me breakfast this morning, who had shyly shown me pictures of his baby daughter. Gone. Because of me. Because I was in this room.

Dante’s expression flickered for a fraction of a second—a crack in his formidable armor of control—before it hardened into granite. He strode to the shattered window, glass crunching under his custom Italian shoes. He stared out into the night, his back to me. The city lights of Chicago glittered below, cold and indifferent.

“How did they get past security?” he asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

“They knew the blind spots,” Enzo replied, his brow furrowed. “They knew the patrol schedule, the cameras… everything. It’s like they had a map of the entire building’s security protocols.”

Dante turned slowly. “A map,” he repeated, the word dripping with venom. His gaze swept the room, past the bodies, past me, and settled on a small, almost unnoticeable device lying near the door. A keycard. A level-five security keycard, the highest clearance. Only five people in his entire organization possessed one.

He walked over and picked it up, his movements unnervingly calm. He held it between his thumb and forefinger as if it were a dead rat. The name printed on it was one I recognized. It belonged to Marco, Dante’s consigliere. The man who had been with him for over a decade. The man who had personally vetted me and overseen my “acquisition.”

“No,” I whispered, the sound escaping my lips before I could stop it. “Not Marco.”

Dante’s head snapped towards me, his eyes narrowing. “You know something.”

It wasn’t a question; it was a command.

“He… he came to see me yesterday,” I stammered, my mind racing. “He said he was checking on my well-being. He told me… he told me that if I ever needed anything, anything at all, I should come to him. That he understood what it was like to be trapped.” I looked down at my hands, twisting in my lap. “He said you were a monster, and that he was the only one who could protect me from you.”

The silence that followed was more terrifying than the gunfire. The air in the room grew thick, charged with a lethal energy. Dante’s face was a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. It wasn’t the hot, explosive anger I’d seen before. This was a cold, deep, bottomless fury that promised a slow and painful end for the man who had betrayed him.

He was a traitor within his own ranks. He had fed Viktor the information. He had facilitated the attack. He had tried to use me as a pawn to get to Dante. And I, naive, terrified Alessia, had almost fallen for it.

“He wasn’t protecting you, Alessia,” Dante said, his voice a low growl that vibrated through my bones. “He was delivering you. Viktor’s men weren’t here to kill me. They were here to take you.” He took a step closer, his powerful frame radiating a terrifying intensity. “Don’t you understand? You are the prize they are all fighting over. And now, because of your conversation with Marco, they know you are a willing, pliable target.”

His words hit me like a physical blow. I wasn’t just a stolen bride anymore. I was a liability. A weakness he couldn’t afford. The look in his eyes wasn’t just fury; it was something else, something that looked terrifyingly like… calculation.

He turned to Enzo. “Find Marco. I want him brought to me. Alive.”

“And what about the girl?” Enzo asked, his eyes darting to me.

Dante didn’t look at me. He was already pulling out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen. “Viktor is still out there. He failed tonight, and he’ll be even more desperate. She’s not safe here anymore. No one is safe.”

He finally met my gaze, his eyes as hard as obsidian. “You were a fool to trust him. And now, because of your stupidity, one of my best men is dead. You’ve made yourself a target, Alessia. And a liability.”

He took a step towards me, and I flinched, expecting his anger to crash down on me. But he stopped just out of reach. His voice was devoid of all emotion, which was somehow worse.

“There’s only one place he won’t dare to follow,” he said, the words chilling me to the bone. “Get your coat. We’re leaving. Now.”

He strode out of the room without a backward glance, leaving me amidst the carnage and the corpse of the man who had died protecting me. I had trusted the wrong man, and now, my only hope for survival lay in the hands of the man I had been stolen from. The man who now saw me not as a bride, but as a burden. As I scrambled to my feet, my heart hammered with a terrifying, gut-wrenching certainty.

Dante was taking me to a place he believed was safe. But as I stared at Luca’s lifeless body, I knew one thing for sure: Viktor wasn’t the only devil I had to fear. The cold, calculated look in Dante’s eyes told me he was something far more dangerous. He wasn’t just a mafia king.

He was a man who had just been handed the perfect excuse to start a war.
